Description
What type of wine it is
Poggio Scalette's Chianti Classico is a still red wine that provides a crisp and direct interpretation of Sangiovese from Lamole. Produced in Tuscany within the Chianti Classico appellation, this wine is distinguished by its fresh, dynamic, and balanced style, characterised by an agile and linear structure that highlights the fruity component. Its easy-drinking nature and dry palate make for a precise and very accessible sip. The entire production process takes place in concrete vats, a technical choice designed to preserve aromatic integrity and offer a highly clean organoleptic profile. It pairs successfully with pork dishes, savoury meats, and matured cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Chianti Classico originates in Tuscany, specifically in the Ruffoli area, a hamlet of Greve in Chianti, a region of renowned winemaking vocation. The vineyards are nestled on scenic hillside terraces situated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, with an optimal west-south-west exposure that ensures ideal ripening conditions for the Sangiovese grapes. The soil has a sandy-loam matrix and is very rich in rock fragments, a combination that contributes decisively to giving the wine its typical fresh and dry profile. The vines, trained using Guyot and spurred cordon systems, are over twenty years old.
How it is produced
The production process for Poggio Scalette's Chianti Classico begins in the first half of October with the harvest. The grapes are brought to the cellar, where both alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place inside lined concrete vats. This specific technical choice allows the original chromatic and olfactory characteristics of the Sangiovese to be kept intact. Ageing in concrete continues for a period of 10 months in the same containers, a necessary time to harmonise the wine's components and ensure its structural agility without introducing notes derived from wood.
History and background
Founded in 1991 in Ruffoli, the Poggio Scalette estate carries on the glorious history of Tuscan winemaking through the careful work of oenologists Vittorio and Jurij Fiore. The very first vintage of this wine was produced in 2009, marking the start of a journey aimed at faithfully expressing the true nature of the terroir. The deep connection with the past is sealed by the traditional Gallo Nero (Black Rooster), a centuries-old emblem and a proud guarantee of authenticity. The estate continues to honour its noble heritage, achieving global triumphs, celebrated by a prestigious score of 92 points from James Suckling.
