Description
What type of wine it is
Oddero's Barolo Vignarionda Riserva is a great Piedmontese red with a structured profile, made from Nebbiolo grapes in the heart of the Barolo Riserva territory, a Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG). On the nose, it offers a layered array of dark fruit and rose, interwoven with balsamic hints of tobacco, liquorice, and cinchona. The tasting reveals a mineral sip, dry and remarkably broad, supported by a lively freshness and smooth tannins that guarantee exquisite longevity, aided by long ageing in Austrian oak barrels.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie in the famous Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga d’Alba. The rows of vines stand at the top of the hill, at an altitude of 360 metres, where the southern exposure ensures perfect ripening of the clusters. The presence of vines nearly fifty years old ensures low yields, giving the glass a concentration and gustatory definition of the highest level. Oddero's meticulous work in the vineyard results in a limited production of great prestige, also celebrated by the top awards from wine critics.
How it is produced
The production process begins in October with a selective manual harvest. This is followed by alcoholic fermentation, enhanced by daily pumping over and wetting of the cap for almost a month, to encourage optimal extraction from the skins. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine ages for about forty months in Austrian oak barrels: a slow rest that carves its structure and tannic texture. Subsequent rest in the cellar at a controlled temperature ensures a harmonious evolution, defining a glass ideal for accompanying game dishes and aged cheeses.
History and Curiosities
The Oddero family, established in Piedmont since the 18th century, stewards the famous Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga d’Alba. Situated at the top of the hill at an altitude of 360 metres, with full southern exposure, the historic vines planted in 1972 ensure very low yields and an exceptional expression of the terroir. Produced in only three thousand bottles per year, this Barolo Riserva represents a genuine oenological rarity. Its extraordinary longevity makes it ideal for exclusive vertical tastings that reveal its elegant evolution.

The history of today’s winery is inextricably tied to that of Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926 and grandson of the first Giacomo in the family (whom he was named after). Under Giacomo’s guidance, Poderi e Cantine Oddero took on its current productive configuration, extending vineyard property, increasing bottle production, and upholding a high quality that today is recognized worldwide.
The legacy of Giacomo Oddero is carried on today by his daughter Mariacristina, who entered the family business near the end of the 1990s, and grandchildren Isabella and Pietro, who represent the seventh generation of a family with over a century and a half of vinicultural tradition behind them.
