Description

What type of wine it is

The Grasberg from Marcel Deiss is a still organic white wine that interprets the authentic essence of the Alsace appellation. The result of a profound field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer grapes, it offers a medium-dry and structured style on the palate. The palate is dynamic and tense, animated by a lively acidity that enhances its distinct mineral component leading to an extremely long-lasting finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Bergheim, from a high-altitude vineyard on the Grasberg slope, located within the famous Altenberg de Bergheim cru. The cool climate of the area gives the harvest great energy. The Jurassic limestone soils feature a thin surface layer over a deep bedrock rich in fossils. This particular geology encourages the vines to develop deep roots, transferring a complex mineral imprint directly into the glass.

How it is produced

The production technique is based on a field blend, where the grapes are harvested and vinified together to enhance the characteristics of each individual grape variety and fully express the complexity of the terroir.

History and curiosities

In the 2022 vintage, Marcel Deiss presents Monte dell’Erba, originating from a high-altitude plot of the Altenberg de Bergheim, in Alsace. In this extreme location, the thin soil resting on poor Jurassic limestone forces the roots deep down, infusing the wine with an intense mineral energy. The vineyard preserves the authentic field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer, vinified together to enhance the identity of the cru. This taut and complex organic white wine was awarded 95 points by the prestigious magazine Vinous.

Domaine Marcel DEISS is located in Bergheim, a small village nestling in the heart of the wine region of Alsace, equidistant from the northern and southern boundaries of the region. Current winemaker Jean-Michel DEISS was born into a long-established family of wine growers, living at BERGHEIM since 1744.

Managed today by Jean-Michel DEISS, the domaine consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers.

The extreme variation in conditions of production at the domaine have led Jean-Michel DEISS to seek to express in each wine the three factors that make a wine complete : the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir.

The greater the wine, the more the gustatory characteristics linked to the soil take the place of the typicity linked to grape variety or vintage.

When speaking of terroir, the following have to be taken into consideration : geology, pedology, climate and microclimate, technical exploitation of the character of the soil, microfauna and flor, and the traditional methods and techniques used to produce wines.
