Description

What type of wine it is

De Loach Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a still white wine with a designation of origin that is a pure expression of Chardonnay, coming from the renowned Russian River Valley in California. Produced with partial fermentation in steel and ageing in oak barrels, this Chardonnay stands out for its aromas of orange blossom and honeysuckle, which are intertwined with notes of lime zest, tangerine, and nutmeg. On the palate, it offers a full and creamy mouthful, perfectly balanced by a vibrant acidity and a clear mineral vein. The solid structure, enriched by slight toasted nuances, makes this label ideal for accompanying flavoursome fish dishes or a rich mushroom risotto.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Russian River Valley, a famous wine-growing area located in the Sonoma Valley. The microclimate of this area encourages excellent ripening, giving the wine a defined structure and a clear mineral character. De Loach manages the vineyards through rigorous organic and biodynamic farming, demonstrating a deep respect for the vitality of the land. This agronomic commitment translates into an authentic expression of the terroir, capable of delivering ripe fruit with a sharp profile and a clean, vibrant finish.

How it is produced

Winemaking begins with whole-cluster pressing and a spontaneous fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. This is followed by a careful blend between a portion aged in stainless steel tanks and a fraction left to evolve in French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place to increase the smoothness on the palate. The wine then rests on the noble lees through regular bâtonnage practices. This prolonged ageing harmoniously integrates the citrusy and spicy notes, providing a persistent and highly precise finish.

From this winery
As a pioneering producer and winegrower of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, DeLoach Vineyards has been experimenting with and perfecting the best combinations of soil, rootstock and clones for over four decades. In 2003, the Boisset family brought two generations of sustainable winemaking experience from Burgundy, France to California’s Russian River Valley and started transitioning the 17-acre estate vineyard to organic and Biodynamic farming, creating by pulling up the vines and planting cover crops to revitalize the soil. During the replanting, DeLoach partnered with winegrowers equally dedicated to and passionate about eco-friendly farming practices and producing high-quality wines — relationships that continue today.

When this Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Zinfandel Great were purchased by the scion of a prominent French wine company, the focus of the operation became less "mainstream," not more. Like Benziger, Deloach celebrates its organic and Biodynamic certified status and encourages visitors to learn more in its garden experience and tasting flights.

Owners Suzanne Hagins and Chris Condos are so committed to making wine only from certified organic grapes, they say so right on the label! It’s not as common as you might think. Both career winemakers, this husband and wife team have managed to put together a little garden oasis amid the apple trees of Sebastopol. They also pour organic cider, with wine fresh from the tap at their stylish tasting room. Look for their new certified organic wine, too — which means no sulfites added — when it’s available, as well as a Biodynamic wine or two.
