Description
Type of wine
The Chianti Classico Il Poggiale Riserva from Castellare di Castellina is a Tuscan red wine born from a blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo. This proud representative of the Chianti Classico denomination is distinguished by a structured and complex profile, designed for a long evolution over time. On the palate, it offers a fresh and savoury entry, supported by rounded tannins, which closes with a long and persistent finish with elegant floral hints and fruity cherry notes. Its identity takes shape through targeted vinification and careful ageing in French oak barrels.
Origin
The grapes come from Castellina in Chianti, in the historical heart of the Tuscan region, harvested exclusively from the single vineyard Il Poggiale. This plot is located at an altitude of between 350 and 400 metres, with perfect south-westerly exposure that encourages optimal ripening of the bunches. The clay-limestone and silty soils, combined with low yields per hectare, give the wine remarkable aromatic concentration and a vibrant freshness. The estate operates with rigorous attention to protecting the ecosystem, excluding the use of pesticides and herbicides to enhance the most authentic expression of the territory.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place in mid-October, followed by maceration on the skins for ten days at a controlled temperature. Alcoholic fermentation in steel lasts for two weeks, preparing the wine for the subsequent malolactic fermentation. The maturation phase takes place in French oak barrels for a period ranging from twelve to eighteen months, during which the wine enriches its structure and defines its aromatic profile. The process concludes with a long bottle ageing of twelve months, essential for perfectly integrating the tannins.
History and curiosities
Founded in 1977, Castellare di Castellina protects the land by excluding pesticides and herbicides. From here comes Il Poggiale, a single-vineyard cru facing south-west. The 25-30 year old vines produce concentrated grapes thanks to low yields. Overseen by Alessandro Cellai, the Riserva is aged in barriques. First produced in 1993, this label highlights the elegance and immense expressive power of Sangiovese.
