Description
What type of wine it is
Conterno Aldo's Barolo Bussia is a still red wine of great structure and expression, belonging to the prestigious Barolo appellation. This pure Nebbiolo, obtained from the Michet and Lampia varieties, represents one of the most faithful expressions of the Piedmont territory. On the nose, it reveals a deep and complex profile, with elegant notes of leather, vanilla, rose petals, plum and citrus. On the palate, it is taut and fresh, supported by a remarkable acidity that highlights hints of cherry, aniseed and oregano. Possessing formidable ageing potential, it is perfect when paired with structured meats, game and mature cow's milk cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Barolo originates from the historic and renowned Bussia locality, situated in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, in Piedmont. The vineyards, boasting a minimum age of 15-20 years, extend across hills at an altitude of approximately 400 metres. The soil is characterised by a complex composition of calcareous marls alternating with layers of sand, which gives the grapes a unique aromatic precision and a distinctive gustatory tension. This particular combination of altitude and soil composition, combined with the area's ancient oenological tradition, ensures the production of a Nebbiolo with exceptional qualities.
How it is produced
Production begins in mid-October with a rigorous manual harvest and the meticulous selection of the bunches directly in the vineyard. The vinification involves alcoholic fermentation with maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled steel tanks (up to 32°C) for a period of 20-30 days, accompanied by repeated rackings. After this initial phase in steel, the wine undergoes a long period of maturation and ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, resting for over two years. This careful production process allows the wine to smooth its tannins, developing the extraordinary complexity that distinguishes it.
History and Trivia
The wine's roots are deep in the historic hills of Monforte d'Alba, where the Conterno Aldo winery carries forward a winemaking vocation begun in nineteen twenty. This territory’s connection with oenology is profound and dates back to the Unification of Italy. In eighteen sixty-one, the illustrious Camillo Benso di Cavour consecrated Barolo DOCG as the country's official wine. This fascinating past intertwines the birth of the nation with the great and authentic Piedmontese tradition that has remained intact to this day.
