Description
What kind of wine it is
Chronicon by Zaccagnini is a still red wine that enhances the Montepulciano grapes of the eponymous Abruzzo denomination. To the eye, it reveals a ruby red colour with garnet hues. The bouquet combines hints of violet and cherry with notes of white pepper, vanilla and touches of undergrowth. On the palate, it expresses a full and robust body, balanced by fine, rounded tannins and an enveloping structure, enriched by ageing in steel and wooden barrels.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in Bolognano, in the Casauria Valley, a prime area for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The Chronicon vineyard benefits from a breezy climate and a west-facing exposure, ensuring regular ripening of the bunches. The vines grow on medium-textured clay soils, which are essential for giving the wine its intense colour concentration and solid backbone. This particular microclimate encourages balanced plant development, imparting to the glass the aromatic intensity and distinct spicy character that define the region.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place at the end of September. The grapes undergo gentle pressing and submerged cap maceration with temperature-controlled fermentation for about two weeks, promoting optimal extraction of colour and phenolics. Ageing continues in steel and wooden barrels, an essential step to smooth the tannins and integrate the soft vanilla notes. To fully appreciate its complex aromatic expression, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at temperatures between 14 and 18°C.
