Description

What kind of wine it is

Riesling Zeppelin Mülheimer Sonnenlay is a still, semi-aromatic white wine produced by Max Ferdinand Richter. To the eye, this Riesling displays a straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. The bouquet opens with aromas of citrus, apple and apricot, blended with distinct mineral notes. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, with a semi-sweet character balanced by vibrant acidity and enriched by hints of pear and honey that fade into a pleasantly persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the Mülheimer Sonnenlay vineyard, an outstanding site located in Germany, in the Mosel region. This terroir is characterised by blue slate soils, which impart a pronounced minerality to the wine. The Max Ferdinand Richter winery, with a history spanning over three centuries, enhances the natural varietal expression. This wine is a historical tribute to the journeys of Count Zeppelin, whose guests could enjoy these wines aboard the famous airship. The local microclimate fosters an unbreakable bond with its place of origin.

How it is produced

The winemaking process is designed to preserve the aromatic intensity and freshness of the fruit, creating an extremely enjoyable semi-sweet white. With an ageing potential of between five and ten years, this wine proves versatile in pairings, elegantly accompanying white meats, fish dishes and cheeses. The perfect harmony between softness and acidity makes it the ideal partner for oriental cuisine, enhancing complex flavours such as duck breast with mango chutney. A serving temperature between eight and twelve degrees is recommended.

History and Curiosities

Produced by the historic winery Weingut Max Ferd. Richter, founded in 1680 in the Moselle region, the Riesling Zeppelin 2024 pays tribute to German winemaking excellence. The grapes come from the renowned Mülheimer Sonnenlay vineyard, where the blue slate soil imparts a vibrant freshness to the wine. This elegant white celebrates the legendary journeys of Count Zeppelin: once served aboard the ‘Graf Zeppelin’ airship, it transforms every glass into a fascinating fragment of wine history.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1680
Founded in 1680, the winery looks back on more than 300 years of family ownership. The first documented purchase of a vineyard – a plot in Brauneberg – dates back to 17 April 1643. The manor house with its French garden was built in 1774 by the grandson of the company's founder. In 1880, Max Ferd. Richter built a modern winery, which houses one of the largest and most extensive wooden barrel cellars on the Moselle. Today, the winery is managed by Dr Dirk M. F. Richter, the ninth generation of the family. Since the summer of 2012, Constantin M.F. Richter, the tenth generation, has also been working in the company. Read more
