Description

What kind of wine it is

Villiera Pinotage is a still South African red wine with an intense ruby colour. On the nose, it reveals notes of blackberry and plum, enriched by subtle hints of vanilla, chocolate and coffee. On the palate, it is smooth and well-balanced, supported by a velvety texture and fine, integrated tannins. The long, juicy finish, characterised by an elegant smoky touch, makes it the ideal pairing for grilled meats and game, and it also proves excellent with cheeses and spicy dishes after about an hour of decanting.

Where it comes from

It originates in the Stellenbosch region, crafted by Villiera, a family-run winery strongly committed to sustainability. The Pinotage grapes come from old vines grown within a nature reserve, designed to protect local biodiversity and ensure respect for the soil. This environmental focus translates into strict organic viticulture aimed at selecting only healthy, perfectly ripe fruit, thus encouraging the development of mature tannins and delivering a modern expression of the grape variety.

How it is produced

Production begins with the manual harvesting of the bunches at optimal ripeness. After gentle crushing and destemming, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, supported by regular pump-overs for proper extraction. The wine is then pressed just before dryness to complete malolactic fermentation in tank. This is followed by a twelve-month maturation period in French oak barrels, using a proportion of new wood, a step that imparts subtle spicy notes and shapes an elegant and well-defined structure.

History and Curiosities

Born in the terroir of Stellenbosch, the Villiera Pinotage 2023 expresses authentic South African character thanks to a commitment to organic viticulture. From this winery
Cousins Jeff and Simon Grier started the family-owned Villiera Wines outside Stellenbosch in 1983 and embarked on an extensive replanting of classic and local varietals.

Cathy Brewer (née Grier) later joined the family team to head up the sales, marketing and export divisions. The introduction of hi-tech cellar facilities for the production of still wines as well as Cap Classique combined with a unique wine business philosophy has seen Villiera developing into one of the largest private wineries in the country.
