Description
What kind of wine it is
Derthona Costa del Vento by Vigneti Massa is a vibrant white wine from Piedmont, made from Timorasso grapes. This variety expresses aromas of pineapple, pink grapefruit, mountain pine and strawberry tree jam. Vinification in steel involves spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts. The result is a sip with an enveloping structure, enriched by a chalky mineral texture and pronounced savouriness, culminating in a pleasant almond finish.
Where it comes from
This white originates in the Colli Tortonesi, in Monleale, from the oldest vines of the renowned Costa del Vento vineyard. The rows, situated at three hundred metres altitude with a west-southwest exposure, enjoy ideal conditions for ripening. The clay-limestone soils impart a clear salinity to the glass. Production is overseen by Vigneti Massa, an outstanding independent winemaker and historic guardian of the Timorasso grape.
How it is produced
After careful selection, manual harvesting ensures only perfectly healthy grapes reach the cellar. The process excludes the use of wood to preserve the varietal tension, opting for ageing in steel on fine lees for about a year. The glass appears substantial and consistent, with clear citrus and resinous notes. Its vibrant savouriness makes it ideal for enhancing fish dishes, vegetarian courses and fresh cheeses.
History and Curiosities
From the Colli Tortonesi, Derthona Costa del Vento celebrates the vision of Walter Massa, the pioneer who revived the native Timorasso grape. Produced from the oldest vineyards of the winery founded in 1879, this wine embodies a purist approach. After meticulous manual selection, the must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and matures on fine lees in stainless steel for about a year. An authentic expression, awarded 94 points by James Suckling, capable of enhancing the pure varietal identity without the use of wood.

Massa Vineyards is the name of the family winery, founded by Walter's ancestors in 1879, which today boasts 23 hectares of property on the hills of Monleale, about 300 meters above sea level. We find the typical vineyards of the territory: Barbera, Croatina, Freisa and above all Timorasso, for which are reserved for 10 hectares. In line with the long family and territorial tradition, these vineyards are cultivated with dazzling attention anda lot of common sense, minimizing treatments. An enemy of all forms of bureaucracy and always against the tide, Walter is convinced that wine is made in the vineyard and in the cellar and not with brands and documents. This is why he chose not to use appellations for many of its labels, thanks to his well-established reputation true artisan of wine.
Walter Massa's production line is represented by Timorasso, which under the name Derthona has now established itself throughout Italy as white wine typical of the Tortonese Hills. Nevertheless, there are even great red wines too, produced with Freisa, Barbera or Croatina. These are unique and unconventional wines, the result of the skill and creative flair Walter Massa: a real oenological pearl of an area with very high potential. Read more
