Description

What type of wine it is

Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc La Crau is a still white wine from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, an authentic expression of the Rhône Valley. Produced by Vieux Télégraphe from a blend of Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Roussanne grapes, it is fermented and matured in barrels on the lees. In the glass, it shows a bright pale gold hue, revealing notes of fresh apple, pear and tobacco, while on the palate it proves smooth and linear, supported by a crisp minerality towards a persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape area, in south-east France. This cuvée originates from the single parcel of La Crau, a renowned stony plateau characterised by a unique geology. The soil features a deep layer of clay and molasse, covered on the surface by the characteristic smoothed pebbles. The structure of the wine is enhanced by the use of old vines, with an average age of around fifty years, capable of transferring the profound minerality of the terroir into the glass.

How it is produced

Production begins with a meticulous hand-harvest, which involves a double sorting of the bunches in the vineyard and a third selection upon arrival at the cellar. After a gentle pneumatic pressing, the must undergoes static sedimentation before fermentation. The latter takes place within barrels, where the wine matures for a long time in contact with its own lees. This process provides roundness and structure, concluding with a period of bottle ageing of about one year before release.

History and interesting facts

Boasting a documented history dating back to 1891, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe crafts the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc La Crau. This elegant wine originates from an exceptional single plot: a stony plateau famous for the characteristic pebbles resting on layers of clay and molasse. By making the most of precious vines over fifty years old, the estate distils the authentic minerality of the terroir into a glass of vibrant smoothness. Awarded very high scores by the most renowned international guides, this label embodies pure French oenological excellence.

From this winery
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe has been run by our family, the Brunier family, for six generations - since 1891 to be precise. The estate’s vineyards, 60 years old on average, are planted on the celebrated Plateau of La Crau, a site renowned for grape-growing in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This terroir imparts to our wines a highly distinctive minerality, as if they have been filtered through the thick layer of large pebbles left behind when the Alpine glaciers melted, long before the Rhône Valley formed.
