Description
What kind of wine it is
Maurus is a still red wine produced by Vie di Romans, representing the Friuli Isonzo region. Made entirely from Merlot grapes, it stands out for its intense ruby red colour. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied, soft and enveloping structure, supported by velvety-textured tannins that enhance its persistence. It pairs perfectly with pasta dishes with ragù, grilled red meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The vineyards are located in the municipality of Mariano del Friuli, cultivated using the spur cordon system. The soils, characterised by abundant stones and excellent drainage, have a silty-sandy and silty-clayey composition. The distinctive reddish colour indicates a richness in iron and aluminium oxides. This mineral terroir promotes balanced vine growth, giving the wine solidity and harmony.
How it is produced
After harvesting, vinification involves a fermentation phase at a controlled temperature. The maturation process continues with eighteen months of ageing in barrels, followed by a period in stainless steel for natural clarification. The bouquet offers notes of dark plums and ripe wild berries, enriched by sweet spices and subtle vegetal nuances that define a deep and complex aromatic profile.
History and Curiosities
The Maurus Merlot 2021 from Vie di Romans bears witness to the centuries-old dedication of the Gallo family in Friuli Isonzo. Produced on iron-rich soils, this still red 100% Merlot, awarded 93 points by Suckling, matures for 18 months in barriques, acquiring a rare elegance. On the nose, it releases intense aromas of dark plums, ripe wild berries and sweet spices. On the palate, it is soft, warm and enveloping, supported by a velvety tannic structure that pairs masterfully with succulent red meats, game and tasty mature cheeses.
