Description

What kind of wine it is

Tuzko Birtok Cabernet Franc Pannon is a still red wine from Hungary, made exclusively from Cabernet Franc grapes. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby colour, heralding a layered aromatic bouquet that weaves together notes of morello cherry, blackcurrant and stone fruits. The nose is further enriched by hints of aromatic herbs, tobacco and a delicate earthy undertone. On the palate, it offers a medium to full body, characterised by a fleshy texture and fine, well-integrated tannins. The tasting experience concludes with a pleasantly spicy finish, supported by lively acidity that enhances its drinkability.

Where it comes from

The grapes for this wine are grown in Mőcsény, within the Tolna district, in the heart of southern Transdanubia, Hungary. This area, known as the Pannon region, provides the ideal soil and climate conditions for cultivating Cabernet Franc. The Tuzko Birtok estate manages historic vineyards in a setting with a deep agricultural heritage, whose roots date back to 1799. The ancient cellars carved into tuff are the perfect place for the wine to mature, ensuring a stable thermal environment. The expression of the Tolna area is reflected in a wine that faithfully embodies the connection between the grape variety and the territorial vocation of the region.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, a process aimed at preserving the freshness and purity of the primary aromas. The wine then matures for fourteen months in Hungarian oak barrels, acquiring subtle hints of vanilla and a gentle woody note that does not overpower the fruit character. To fully appreciate its aromatic range, it is recommended to decant for one hour before serving. At the table, this red pairs harmoniously with succulent beef steaks, game meats and boards of mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Born in the heart of Southern Transdanubia, Cabernet Franc Pannon embodies the ancient heritage of Tűzkő Birtok, a Hungarian winery founded in 1799 by the noble Apponyi family. Today, under the guidance of the experienced Antinori and Mazzei families, the estate carefully preserves historic vineyards and evocative cellars carved into the tuff in Mőcsény, within the Tolna DOC area. Tasting this elegant still red wine is like taking a journey through time, discovering a centuries-old heritage and an extraordinary winemaking tradition that has remained intact to this day.

  • Start up year: 1799
Founded at the end of the XVIII century, Tűzkő is one of the oldest wineries in Hungary. The estate’s name means flint stone and deposits of this mineral have been found in this historical wine producing region over the centuries. The estate was owned for many years by the noble French family of the Counts of Apponyi. During Hungary’s communist period, private property was taken under state control and Tűzkő became a cooperative, however, wine production continued.

The Antinori family was deeply inspired by the quality of the wines produced, the presence of existing vineyards on the land, the historical, impressive cellars excavated in tuff rock and the beauty of the landscape so, in 2000, they decided to take over management of the winery together with the Mazzei family.
