Description

What kind of wine it is

Tramin Glarea Chardonnay from Cantina Tramin is a still white wine that reflects the character of the Alto Adige region. Made by showcasing Chardonnay, this dry wine offers a pleasant structure. On the palate, its rounded texture harmonises with a distinct minerality, delivering a juicy sip and a long, harmonious finish. Its natural balance makes it ideal for pairing with creamy risottos, spaghetti with clams, or fish dishes with butter sauces.

Where it comes from

The vineyards are located on the lower slopes of the Mendola in Alto Adige. The vines grow on soils rich in calcareous gravel, an alluvial cone formed by the Höllenbach stream, which gives the wine a distinctive savoury character. The area enjoys a unique microclimate, with warm days and nights cooled by the katabatic winds from the Höllental valley. The significant temperature variations slow down ripening, preserving the freshness and aromatic precision of the grapes.

How it is produced

After meticulous hand harvesting, gentle pressing follows. Fermentation in wood takes place at a controlled temperature, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. Subsequent ageing in barrels enhances the structure while maintaining a clean sensory profile. Straw yellow in colour with greenish highlights, this white expresses aromas of ripe fruit such as banana, pineapple and dried apricot. On the palate, notes of almond and a distinct mineral trace emerge.

History and Curiosities

The name Glarea originates from the Rhaeto-Romance term for “gravel”, a tribute to the precious calcareous gravel soil shaped by the Höllenbach stream, which imparts a pronounced minerality to the wine. Born from the dedication of Cantina Tramin, a cooperative founded in 1898 that brings together the passion of one hundred and sixty families, this superb Chardonnay expresses all the elegance of the South Tyrolean terroir. Led by oenologist Willi Stürz, the winery creates a harmonious white, awarded 92 points by James Suckling.

In a time of hardship for Alto Adige’s wine producers, Christian Schrott, parish priest of Tramin and later Member of the Austrian Parliament, founded our cooperative in 1898 in order to protect the livelihood and future of the wine producers from this mountain area. Thanks to the strength of this union, Cantina Tramin has become one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperatives and an example recognized all over the world.

Today, we are 160 families tending approximately 270 hectares of vineyards. We pride ourselves on the fact that each bottle is the quintessence of our philosophy of life and work: accuracy, commitment, trust and creativity.
