Description

What kind of wine is it

The Cabernet Sauvignon from Cantina Tramin is a dry red wine that faithfully represents Alto Adige. In the glass, it displays a deep garnet red colour, revealing a rich bouquet of blackcurrant and red fruits. The aromatic profile expands with hints of dried fruit and chocolate, interwoven with subtle notes of green pepper, cedar and fine spices. On the palate, it is a wine of good structure, with a full and rounded sip, capable of offering an enveloping balance between fruit and flavour texture.

Where does it come from

The grapes come from vineyards located on the hills of Termeno and Egna, at an altitude between 250 and 350 metres. The calcareous soils, characterised by a gravelly-silty and clayey matrix, provide optimal drainage. The area benefits from a microclimate with marked temperature variations between day and night. The constant interplay between the Mediterranean influence, the breezes from Lake Garda and the cool mountain winds encourages regular ripening, giving the wine a precise aromatic definition and vibrant flavour tension.

How is it produced

Vinification begins with a manual harvest to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After destemming, alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel or concrete containers, followed by partial malolactic fermentation to soften the acidic component. The subsequent ageing in large barrels and barriques allows the raw material to evolve slowly, harmoniously integrating the tannins. The result is an intense red, perfect for accompanying red meats, game and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1898, Cantina Tramin enhances the noble Bordeaux grape variety by cultivating an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon on the hills of Termeno and Egna. At an altitude between 250 and 350 metres, the calcareous and gravelly-silty soils meet the Mediterranean warmth and cool mountain breezes, giving rise to a structured and profound red wine. Crafted by oenologist Willi Stürz, this authentic expression of the region boasts remarkable ageing potential, promising a fascinating and complex evolution in the bottle until 2029.

In a time of hardship for Alto Adige’s wine producers, Christian Schrott, parish priest of Tramin and later Member of the Austrian Parliament, founded our cooperative in 1898 in order to protect the livelihood and future of the wine producers from this mountain area. Thanks to the strength of this union, Cantina Tramin has become one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperatives and an example recognized all over the world.

Today, we are 160 families tending approximately 270 hectares of vineyards. We pride ourselves on the fact that each bottle is the quintessence of our philosophy of life and work: accuracy, commitment, trust and creativity.

At the table, the richness of this wine pairs perfectly with main courses of red meats, pork, and fine game. Its enveloping structure also brings out the best in flavourful first courses and platters of mature cheeses. To fully release its elegant fruity and spicy bouquet, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at 18–20 °C.
