Description

What kind of wine it is

Ghenos Primitivo di Manduria is a still red wine by Torrevento, an authentic expression of the eponymous Apulian denomination. On the nose, it reveals aromas of ripe dark fruits, such as black cherry and plum, intertwined with notes of liquorice and sweet spices. On the palate, it is warm and full-bodied, structured by dense and velvety tannins and supported by a pleasant freshness. It finishes with a harmonious and spicy aftertaste, enhanced by hints of chocolate. Thanks to its intensity, it elegantly accompanies grilled red meats and game, mature cheeses and flavourful first courses.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow on the low-altitude Murgia plateau, in a favourable microclimate tempered by coastal winds and nourished by underground springs. The vines are cultivated using the traditional Apulian bush vine method and sink their roots into medium-textured red soils, rich in clay and calcareous components. Torrevento, located in the fascinating Alta Murgia National Park within an ancient monastery, operates sustainably to maintain low yields and enhance the most authentic expression of the grape variety.

How it is produced

After a careful harvest of the Primitivo grapes, vinification begins with fermentation in stainless steel. This stage involves a long maceration in contact with the skins, a fundamental step for extracting colour and phenolic profile. The wine rests for ten months in steel to preserve the freshness of the fruit, then continues with six months of ageing in barrels to smooth out any roughness and round out the structure. The result is an enveloping sip, ready to enjoy but with excellent ageing potential.

History and Curiosities

The Ghenos Primitivo di Manduria DOC is born from the expertise of Torrevento, a renowned winery located in the heart of Alta Murgia within a charming former monastery. Produced from grapes grown using the traditional Apulian bush vine system, this vegan wine captures the essence of the region through careful ageing: ten months in steel and six in barrique. The result is an enveloping and harmonious red, awarded 93 points by Luca Maroni and gold at the Berliner Wein Trophy.

Torrevento's history began in 1948 with the Liantonio family's purchase of the former Benedictine monastery in the Torre del Vento district, in the wildest part of the north-western Murgia. Afterwards, the family converted this monastery into a winery. 57 hectares of vineyards at the foot of Castel del Monte, are now the leading company's core.

Vineyards are only grown with autochthonous vines, following the dictates of sustainable agriculture. At the winery, the production method follows a non-excessively long maceration time and a non-excessive use of wood. Francesco Liantonio has been at the helm; there have been many interventions: the expansion of the vineyard area, investments in technology and innovation and the start of the process for quality certification. It has 500 hectares of vineyards and 2,600,000 bottles, yet it can amaze and innovate, producing wines combining large numbers and quality.
