Description
What kind of wine it is
Torrevento Bolonero is a still red wine from Apulia, created from a blend of Aglianico and Nero di Troia grapes. An authentic expression of Castel del Monte, this blend stands out for its full and fragrant aromatic profile, enriched by delicate spiciness and clear notes of wild berries. Visually, it displays an intense ruby red colour, developing elegant garnet hues over time. On the palate, it is pleasant and well-bodied, offering a harmonious, well-balanced sip characterised by a long-lasting finish with distinct fruity notes.
Where it comes from
The grapes used for this wine grow on the hills of north-western Murgia, in the area of Corato. The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, rooted in a calcareous-clay alluvial soil of medium texture. This specific soil composition gives the wine its typical balanced character and an elegant hint of salinity. Torrevento cultivates these lands following the principles of organic and sustainable agriculture, fully respecting the surrounding ecosystem to enhance the area's natural winemaking vocation.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place between the second and third ten days of October, picking the bunches from vines trained with the spurred cordon trellis system. In the winery, vinification begins with fermentation accompanied by skin maceration, a crucial technique for extracting the right colour and structure. Afterwards, the wine matures in steel tanks for at least eight months, before completing its production cycle with final ageing in glass. The solid flavour structure and pronounced savouriness make this Apulian red the ideal pairing for roasts, red meats, game and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1948 within a former Benedictine monastery in the Murgia region, the Torrevento winery embodies the authentic winemaking tradition of Apulia. Led by the Liantonio family and oenologist Leonardo Palumbo, the company enhances the renowned hills of Corato, giving rise to Bolonero, a proud expression of the Castel del Monte DOC. This deep dedication to the land is celebrated internationally with prestigious awards, including the Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso, which seal the qualitative excellence and historical value of this extraordinary wine.

Vineyards are only grown with autochthonous vines, following the dictates of sustainable agriculture. At the winery, the production method follows a non-excessively long maceration time and a non-excessive use of wood. Francesco Liantonio has been at the helm; there have been many interventions: the expansion of the vineyard area, investments in technology and innovation and the start of the process for quality certification. It has 500 hectares of vineyards and 2,600,000 bottles, yet it can amaze and innovate, producing wines combining large numbers and quality. Read more
