Description
What kind of wine it is
Torre Rosazza presents a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of the Pignolo grape variety. Native to the Eastern Hills of Friuli, it displays a ruby red hue with delicate violet reflections. The bouquet is deep, characterised by spicy notes and ripe morello cherry. On the palate, it stands out for its balsamic tone and full body, where the firm yet smooth tannic structure supports a long-lasting finish, making it ideal to accompany roasts, veal shank and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The rows of vines take root on the hills of Manzano, benefiting from excellent exposure and the refreshing breezes of the Adriatic Sea. The vines grow on ponca soil, a clay marl alternating with sandstone. The naturally low fertility and water retention of the soil enhance the wine’s mineral imprint and structure. Here, Pignolo is cultivated, an ancient Friulian grape variety documented as far back as the fourteenth century, saved from oblivion thanks to a few precious cuttings preserved at the Abbey of Rosazzo.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a rigorous manual harvest, carefully selecting the bunches before destemming. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, with a prolonged skin contact between the must and skins for eight to ten days, essential for extracting colour and polyphenols. Once this phase is complete, the wine is aged in Allier oak barrels for at least twenty-four months, a step that consolidates the tannic structure and broadens the aromatic profile.
History and Curiosities
Pignolo is an ancient Friulian excellence, documented as early as the 1300s and saved from oblivion thanks to the recovery of a few precious vines at the Abbey of Rosazzo. Torre Rosazza enhances this noble grape variety in the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, creating a wine that expresses the elegance of a fascinating borderland. The grapes, strictly hand-harvested, give a proud and enveloping character with a long aromatic persistence, enhanced by twenty-four months of maturation in oak barrels.

In the Colli Orientali del Friuli, and especially in Torre Rosazza, the growing of grapevines has a very ancient history. Already known in Roman times, grapes were also grown in the Middle Ages, along with other crops such as olives and grains. In those years, wine was a commodity or a bargaining chip that demonstrated a family’s wealth.
Noble elegance. The history of Torre Rosazza has been tied to the Antonini family, part of the Udine nobility, since the 1600s. Already the lords of the agricultural estate, the Antonini restored the medieval tower and built the villa that became their home in the hills: Turris Rosacea.
After the Antonini, Torre Rosazza passed to the De Marchi family. But more than any other event, the biggest mark on its history was left by the two World Wars. After the Battle of Caporetto, the estate came under Austrian control before returning to Italy at the end of the war. During the World War II it was the scene of fighting between the German occupation army and the Italian Resistance. Read more
