Description

What kind of wine it is

Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Sant’Elena by Teruzzi is a dry white wine with Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin, produced in Tuscany from Vernaccia grapes. Its intense aromatic profile blends elegant hints of white flowers and citrus fruits with the pronounced mineral notes typical of San Gimignano. Aged in stainless steel tanks, it reveals itself on the palate as fresh, savoury and of excellent intensity. The enveloping sip culminates in a typical almond finish, offering an aromatic complexity ideal for accompanying seafood grills, sushi and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This white wine originates in Tuscany, in the Sant’Elena vineyard located in Racciano. The vines, trained with the spurred cordon method at three hundred metres altitude with south-west exposure, benefit from optimal ripening. The character of the wine is shaped by marine-origin soils from the Pliocene era, rich in ancient fossil shells. These vineyards ensure a balanced yield, transferring the authentic mineral essence of the terroir into the grapes.

How it is produced

The manual harvest precedes a gentle pressing of the whole grapes and static cold settling of the must. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, avoiding malolactic fermentation to preserve the freshness of the aromas. The structure is defined by a prolonged ageing on fine lees for several months in steel at a controlled temperature. The result is a profound wine, with a balanced acidity that enhances its persistence.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1974, the winery Teruzzi & Puthod owes its excellence to the Sant’Elena vineyard in Racciano, located on marine-origin soils rich in Pliocene fossil shells. The label celebrates a medieval “Magical Beast”, an ironic chimera with a bird’s beak, rabbit’s ears, goat’s hooves and a squirrel’s tail. This fascinating creature challenges the prejudices about the so-called “Dark Ages”, inspiring in modern tasters of Vernaccia di San Gimignano the same sense of wonder experienced by readers between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Teruzzi is the contemporary enhancement of ancient Tuscan history and its centuries-old tradition. In 1974, Enrico Teruzzi, an engineer by profession but a winemaker by vocation, founded the winery with the help of his wife Carmen in the enchanting setting of San Gimignano. In 2016, Terra Moretti acquired the winery. Today, they continue Teruzzi’s path of innovation and tradition, leading the winery’s viticulture to achieve important goals while respecting sustainability. Read more
