Description
What kind of wine it is
Sauvignon Quarz from Cantina Terlano is a still white wine that enhances the purity of the Sauvignon grape variety. An expression of the Alto Adige region, it displays a bright straw yellow colour. On the nose, it blends notes of exotic fruits, aromatic herbs and flinty hints. The juicy palate is enlivened by a delicate minerality, accompanied by an opulent structure and a savoury finish. These characteristics make it ideal to pair with seafood crudités, risottos and mature goat's cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown on the hills of Terlano, between 250 and 500 metres above sea level, benefiting from optimal south-west exposure. The soil, composed of volcanic porphyry with quartz inserts, inspires the wine's name and imparts a unique territorial character. Thanks to careful manual harvesting, the bunches faithfully reflect the peculiarities of this mountainous terrain. The microclimate and the mineral nature of the rocks give the wine a vibrant savoury tension, outlining a precise and elegant profile.
How it is produced
In the winery, a gentle pressing of whole bunches is carried out, followed by natural sedimentation of the must and a slow fermentation at controlled temperature. Ageing on the lees lasts nine months and is equally divided between stainless steel tanks and large wooden barrels. The final blend is assembled three months before bottling, perfectly balancing the freshness preserved by the steel with the roundness imparted by the wood, resulting in a harmonious wine with long-lasting flavour persistence.
History and Curiosities
The Sauvignon Quarz Alto Adige DOC bears witness to the dedication of Cantina Terlano (1893). The name pays homage to the quartz crystals in the local volcanic porphyry, a unique terroir that imparts a refined minerality to the wine. Under the expert guidance of oenologist Rudi Kofler, the hand-harvested grapes undergo meticulous ageing on the lees for nine months, equally divided between large wooden barrels and steel tanks. The 2024 vintage stands out for its opulent and sophisticated structure, reaffirming its established international reputation.
