Description
What kind of wine it is
Tramonto d’Oca by Poggio Bonelli is a still red wine from Tuscany, made from Petit Verdot grapes. In the glass, it displays a ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet reveals intense aromas of red fruit jam, pepper and cinnamon, finishing with notes of tobacco, cocoa, scorched earth and leather. On the palate, it expresses powerful tannins and a warm, savoury finish that reflects its remarkable structure. It is recommended to decant it an hour before serving at 16-18 °C. It pairs ideally with grilled red meats, game, pork-based dishes and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of Chianti Classico. The vineyards are situated at 280 metres above sea level with a favourable southern exposure, ensuring optimal ripening and a high concentration of aromas. The Poggio Bonelli estate adopts mainly organic practices, with manual viticulture and a spur-pruned cordon training system that reduces the yield per vine. Under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini, cultivation fully enhances the characteristics of the Sienese terroir, reflecting the authentic vocation of this historic agricultural area.
How it is produced
The production process begins with fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. This is followed by a long maceration on the skins for 18-20 days, essential for extracting colour and dense polyphenols. The maturation continues for 24 months in small oak barrels, enriching the wine’s spicy texture. Finally, a further 6 months in bottle stabilises and harmonises the sensory profile. This rigorous process gives the wine a remarkable ageing potential, allowing it to evolve in the cellar for over ten years.
History and Curiosities

A property that was sought after by some of the most important Sienese families, Poggio Bonelli has belonged to numerous different families throughout the centuries. Firstly, the Spennali family owned it during the Middle Ages and passed it into the hands of the Piccolomini family in the second half of the 16th century. In the following century, probably for dynastic reasons, it became the property of the Landucci family. Finally, at the beginning of the 21st century, it came to belong to the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, the most ancient Italian bank in the territory of Siena. The wine estate is owned by the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, which acts as a shareholder, while a team of professionals with long-standing experience in wine-making carries out the management. The result is a human, dynamic, and solid business. Read more
