Description
What kind of wine it is
Aliotto from Tenuta Podernovo is an organic red wine created from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and other local varieties. A true expression of Tuscany, it displays a bright ruby red colour and a bouquet of morello cherry, aromatic herbs and delicate toasted notes. On the palate, it is enveloping, supported by an elegant tannic structure that gives it roundness. A pronounced savouriness and spicy hints emerge, accompanying the persistent finish. Ideal when allowed to breathe, it enhances red meats and game, mature cheeses and rich first courses.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow in the vineyards of Tenuta Podernovo in Terricciola, on hills that benefit from their proximity to the Tuscan coast. The vines thrive at 137 metres above sea level with optimal exposure, ensuring regular ripening. The microclimate combines with medium-textured sandy-clay-loam soils, rich in fossilised shells. This geological matrix gives the wine a marked minerality and clear savouriness. The vineyard is trained using the spurred cordon method, maintaining balanced yields to best concentrate the aromatic qualities and final structure of the must.
How it is produced
The transformation of the grapes begins with fermentation in stainless steel vats, followed by about two weeks of maceration necessary to extract colour and structure. Ageing continues for twelve months in small oak barrels, a crucial step to soften the tannins and enrich the aromatic profile with subtle toasted nuances. The process concludes with a further maturation in bottle for at least four months, helping to define the overall balance. This process ensures excellent ageing potential, allowing the wine to evolve with elegance.

Next to the winery there is a magnificent complex of late eighteenth century rural buildings in typical Tuscan style, which has been recently restored and transformed into exclusive apartments that offer guests an unforgettable stay in this enchanting and peaceful spot. The wines made at Tenuta Podernovo are Teuto, which matures for 20 months in large oak casks and highlights the zone’s natural vocation for producing a very elegant version of Sangiovese, and Aliotto, made from a blend of 60% Sangiovese together with Cabernet, Merlot and other local grapes. Both display an elegant tannic vein, well-balanced fruit and a finish of ingratiating intensity. The last release of Tenuta Podernovo is Auritea, a pure Cabernet Franc. All three wines have an elegant tannic texture, a balanced structure and a final of persuasive intensity: distinctive signature of this Estate. Read more
