Description
What kind of wine it is
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Ugolforte from Tenuta San Giorgio is an organic red wine with a deep garnet hue. This wine enhances the Sangiovese grape, expressing a full body and pronounced acidity that gives vibrancy to the sip. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of cherry and dried plum, enriched by notes of tobacco, leather, spices and balsamic hints. On the palate, the dense and refined tannins lead to a long, savoury and spicy finish. It is ideal paired with roast meats, game, mature cheeses and truffle-based dishes.
Where it comes from
This Riserva originates in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, on the south-eastern side of the Brunello di Montalcino area in Tuscany. The vineyards are situated between 250 and 400 metres above sea level, with optimal south-eastern exposure. The distinctive microclimate is influenced by Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano that moderates seasonal temperatures. The vines sink their roots into poor, rocky soils characterised by clay, tuff, sandstone, marl and ancient Pliocene sediments. Tenuta San Giorgio actively protects the local biodiversity, preserving the surrounding woods. The wine’s name pays homage to the historic figure Ugolforte, who led the people against the Sienese occupation.
How it is produced
Production follows the principles of organic viticulture, adopting eco-friendly methods and the spur-pruned cordon to ensure low yields. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. Vinification takes place in oak barrels and concrete vats, with long macerations on the skins for optimal aromatic extraction. Ageing continues for thirty months in Slavonian oak barrels, a fundamental stage in defining structural elegance and tannic texture. This meticulous process enhances the purity of the fruit and ensures a splendid evolution over time.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1982, Tenuta San Giorgio celebrates the Tuscan region with the Riserva Ugolforte, a tribute to the legendary brigand who, in the twelfth century, led Montalcino in its resistance against the Sienese. The 2018 vintage is the result of rigorous organic viticulture, favoured by the microclimate of the extinct Monte Amiata volcano and by estate management that protects biodiversity by preserving 110 hectares of woodland. An absolute excellence, awarded 96 points by James Suckling, capable of combining deep historical roots, environmental sustainability and great elegance.

Of the estate’s 142 hectares, just 28 are under vine, all devoted to Sangiovese – the variety that most deeply expresses this land. The rows are trained using the spurred cordon system and kept to very low yields, to preserve the purity and quality of the fruit. Each vineyard is organically farmed and shaped by the singular microclimate of Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano that rises to 1,738 meters and watches over the landscape. Read more
