Description
What kind of wine it is
Collenottolo by Tenuta Bellafonte is a still red wine that expresses the essence of the Sagrantino grape within the Montefalco Sagrantino denomination. On the nose, it reveals hints of iris, lavender, blueberry jam, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it shows excellent balance, where the significant tannic structure is balanced by the intensity of the fruit and delicate toasted notes. Best served after careful decanting, it pairs perfectly with roast pork, robust meat dishes and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Umbria, in the Bevagna area, a region historically dedicated to Montefalco viticulture. The ten hectares of vineyards are situated at an altitude between 260 and 320 metres above sea level. The clay soils, alternating with marl and sandstone formations, create the ideal environment for vine growth. This unique geological composition, combined with low yields per hectare, helps define the intense and concentrated expression that characterises every glass.
How it is produced
The vines benefit from targeted fertilisation using selected manure. In the winery, the destemmed but uncrushed grapes ferment as whole berries spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. This is followed by a long maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels, before a further period of rest in the bottle. This red is bottled without any filtration, a choice that preserves its aromatic integrity and natural expressive character.
History and Curiosities
The Collenottolo from Tenuta Bellafonte celebrates the majesty of Sagrantino, a prized Umbrian grape variety with ancient medieval roots. Historically linked to the liturgical tradition of Montefalco, this oenological masterpiece stands out for its unparalleled intensity. Thanks to its rich polyphenolic profile, it boasts an extraordinary ageing potential, allowing the notes of spices and aromatic herbs to evolve magnificently over time. A true tribute to tradition, it is matured in Slavonian oak barrels to impart a deep and elegant tannic structure.

The vineyards, are located at a height varying between 260 and 320 meters above sea level. They grow on sunny lands, tough and rocky. The typical clay of the area alternates with marly and arenaceous formations. Approximately 10 hectares (24 acres) of vines in all, with old rows and recent installations, give an idea of the project’s size, heedless of small numbers and wholeheartedly striving for the highest possible quality with special attention to natural processes.
The rest of the property, which covers 30 hectares (74 acres), includes woods, a small orchard, and 2500 olive trees of the classic local varieties: ‘frantoio’, ‘leccino’ and especially ‘moraiolo’, able to produce an excellent extra virgin olive oil.
The Estate has been conceived in order to have a complete energy balance and a very low environmental impact, with photovoltaic panels and a biomass heater which also utilises the crop residues. Read more
