Description
What kind of wine it is
Stefano Antonucci Mossone Merlot from Santa Barbara is a still red wine that expresses the identity of the Marche region. To the eye, it displays a lively ruby red colour and an intense aromatic profile. Sweet notes of morello cherry and blackberry blend with hints of vanilla, coffee and chocolate, accompanied by balsamic nuances of liquorice. On the palate, it is smooth and full-bodied, supported by well-balanced tannins and a sensation of enveloping warmth. Its bold structure makes it ideal for pairing with red meats, game, flavourful pork dishes and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The Merlot grapes grow in Barbara, in the province of Ancona, on hills situated between the Misa and Nevola rivers. The vineyards are located at two hundred and sixty metres above sea level with a north-east exposure, on medium-textured soils rich in stones. The stony component of the soil helps to shape a solid flavour profile, while the influence of the nearby Adriatic Sea tempers the climate, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. Production takes place within an ancient monastery that defines the winery's identity, under the guidance of oenologist Pierluigi Lorenzetti.
How it is produced
After harvesting, the must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, in order to preserve the aromatic integrity of the grape variety. The wine is then aged in new, fine-grained barrels with medium toasting. This maturation in wood enriches the structure of the wine and encourages the integration between the richness of the fruit and the complex tertiary notes. The result is a red wine of remarkable consistency, able to harmonise smoothness, vigour and persistence to the fullest.
History and Curiosities
Located in an ancient monastery between the Misa and Nevola rivers, the Santa Barbara estate passionately preserves the authentic winemaking tradition of the Marche region. From these hills comes the Mossone Merlot, whose name pays tribute to the historic nickname of the producer, Stefano Antonucci. Expertly overseen by oenologist Pierluigi Lorenzetti, this red wine expresses the profound essence of stony soils situated at 260 metres above sea level. The 2022 vintage boasts 94 points from Luca Maroni, three Veronelli stars and four Bibenda bunches.
