Description

What kind of wine it is

Sandeman Porto Old Tawny is a fortified wine with an oxidative style, a true expression of Porto. This blend is made from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa grapes. It displays a reddish-brown colour with brick-coloured highlights. On the nose, it combines aromas of stewed ripe fruit, raisins, vanilla and dried fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, enriched by sweet toffee notes, walnuts and spices, finishing with a persistent and satisfying finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Douro, the prime area for these renowned Portuguese wines. After harvesting and an initial rest in their region of origin, the musts are transferred to the historic Sandeman cellars for ageing. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, where prolonged contact with oxygen shapes the amber hues and flavour complexity. The result is a skilful blend of wines aged between nine and twelve years. The time spent in wood perfectly balances the significant residual sugar with a pleasant freshness.

How it is produced

The bunches, hand-picked, are destemmed and crushed before fermentation at a controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins is interrupted by fortification with wine spirit, carried out at the exact moment when the must reaches the desired density. After periodic racking, the wines are carefully selected for the final blend. The wine does not require decanting, but benefits from slight aeration in the glass. Served between 12 and 18°C, it is an ideal pairing for blue cheeses and desserts such as tarte tatin. Once opened, it keeps optimally for up to three months.

History and Curiosities

Created under the supervision of renowned oenologist Luís Sottomayor, this prestigious Porto Tawny DOC celebrates the centuries-old winemaking tradition of the Douro. Its excellent consistency in quality is the result of a masterful blend of wines aged between 9 and 12 years in oak casks, left to mature in the silence of the historic Sandeman cellars. Widely acclaimed by international critics and boasting 90 points from Robert Parker, this fortified wine embodies the essence of Portuguese tradition, offering an elegant, complex tasting experience with timeless charm.
