Description

Type of wine

Appius by San Michele Appiano is a white wine from South Tyrol with a Controlled Designation of Origin, born from a careful blend that combines Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc, with prolonged ageing in barrels and steel tanks. The olfactory profile reveals clear notes of exotic fruit such as pineapple and papaya, combined with nuances of Williams pear and gooseberry. Delicate alpine herbs and balsamic hints enrich the entire aromatic bouquet. On the palate, it expresses a dense and creamy structure, supported by an elegant freshness and a decisive mineral vein, closing the tasting with a compact, persistent finish.

Provenance

The grapes come from selected plots in the Appiano territory, within South Tyrol. The vineyards enjoy an exposure ranging from south-east to south-west, with vines reaching forty years of age. Rooted in deep limestone-gravel soils of morainic origin, these plants guarantee low yields to the clear benefit of aromatic concentration. This peculiar terroir gives the wine a sapid and precise profile, capable of harmonising the richness of the fruit with a vibrant gustatory tension.

How it is produced

Production begins with a late harvest, carried out towards the end of September to collect exclusively bunches at optimal ripeness. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in the cellar, the latter avoided for the Sauvignon Blanc in order to preserve its innate freshness. The wine undergoes an initial ageing in barrels, before being blended after one year. The blend then rests for three years on fine lees in stainless steel tanks. In the glass, it reveals a straw yellow colour with golden and greenish reflections; this prolonged maturation ultimately gives the sip a deep and vital harmony.

History and Interesting Facts

Born in the historic San Michele Appiano winery, Appius is the masterpiece of winemaker Hans Terzer. This limited edition of 7,000 numbered bottles is renewed every year thanks to a unique blend. It is an excellent white wine that boasts exceptionally high scores, such as 98 from Henris and 96 from Decanter, capable of conveying with sublime elegance the passion of an estate founded in 1907.
