Description
What kind of wine is it
San Felice Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni is a Tuscan red wine made from Sangiovese grapes. It presents a deep ruby colour, which heralds complex aromas of blackberries and cherries, enriched by notes of damp earth, violets, myrtle and leather. The palate is vigorous, characterised by a firm tannin and supported by a balanced acidic streak. This Brunello di Montalcino pairs beautifully with flavourful meats, game, roasts and mature cheeses. It is recommended to decant for one hour before serving to appreciate every nuance.
Where does it come from
This wine originates from the Tuscan region of Montalcino. The vineyards are situated between 250 and 300 metres above sea level and benefit from optimal south and south-west exposure. The medium-textured soil, with a predominant clay component resting on sandstone and limestone marl, gives the wine a pronounced territorial character. The San Felice estate cultivates the vines using the spur-pruned cordon system, making full use of a natural environment that encourages the development of a solid tannic structure.
How is it produced
The Sangiovese grapes are harvested during the first week of October. Vinification begins with a twenty-day maceration at controlled temperature, encouraging an intense aromatic extraction. The process continues with a slow maturation of thirty-six months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a further twelve months of bottle ageing. This meticulous process allows the wine to develop remarkable balance and ensures significant longevity, capable of offering great evolution over the years.
History and Curiosities
Produced in Tuscany by the renowned San Felice estate, founded in 1968, Campogiovanni is the authentic expression of its territory. Born from vineyards facing south and south-west and harvested at the beginning of October, this Brunello di Montalcino DOCG showcases pure Sangiovese. The expert ageing of 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels, combined with a year of rest in the bottle, ensures a powerful structure and longevity of up to 15 years. Praised by critics, it boasts 94 points from James Suckling and embodies Italian oenological excellence.
