Description
What kind of wine it is
Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Riserva by Ruffino is a still red wine with Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin that embodies the profound essence of the Tuscan territory. This blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot offers an aromatic profile of great balance. On the nose, intense notes of cherry and plum are revealed, accompanied by elegant hints of violet and rose. Aged in oak barrels, on the palate it is velvety and supported by sweet tannins, finishing with a long mineral trail enriched by clear hints of tobacco, white pepper and coffee.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the heart of Chianti Classico, from the vineyards of Gretole and Santedame in Castellina in Chianti. The rows stretch across hillside slopes between 290 and 450 metres above sea level, an altitude that favours harmonious ripening and the preservation of freshness. The soils, of clay-limestone origin, boast a rich presence of galestro, a fundamental rocky element that gives the wine a pronounced taste structure. This pedoclimatic context ensures the wine's intensity, dynamism and persistent minerality.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place between September and October with a rigorous and careful selection. Vinification involves fermentation in steel at a controlled temperature for about ten days, with pumping over and punching down, followed by maceration on the skins and malolactic fermentation. The wine matures for twenty-four months, resting partly in oak barrels and partly in concrete and steel tanks. After a final three-month refinement in the bottle, this slow process delivers an intense and complex sip, marked by distinct notes of flint and rosemary.
History and Curiosities
The Riserva Ducale was created as a solemn tribute to the Duke of Aosta, who, at the end of the nineteenth century, fell in love with Chianti Ruffino, then known as “stravecchio”. This admiration led the company to become the official supplier to the Royal Household in 1890, a journey that culminated in 1927 with the creation of the iconic Chianti Classico Riserva. True to its noble history, the wine gains complexity thanks to a meticulous twenty-four month maturation in oak, completed by a further three months in the bottle. Multi-award-winning by Bibenda, Decanter and James Suckling, it embodies pure Tuscan excellence.

Ruffino grows grapes in over 600 hectares of vineyards across eight estates: six in Tuscany – Poggio Casciano, Montemasso, Santedame, Gretole, La Solatia and Greppone Mazzi – two in Veneto: Cà del Duca and La Duchessa.
Ruffino was established in Pontassieve in 1877, near Florence. The main headquarters is still located on the same premises, which have been extended, modernized and equipped with innovative technology over the years, without ever losing sight of the company’s history and attachment to the local area.
The value produced by the Ruffino Group in 2019 exceeded 130 million euro.
The export revenue is significant: Ruffino is distributed worldwide due to a structured and well-developed commercial network.
Since 2011, the company has been part of Constellation Brands, an American market leader in the beer, wine & spirits sector. Read more
