Description
What kind of wine it is
Alauda is an organic red wine born in Tuscany from the blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Colorino. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby colour with violet reflections. The bouquet is multifaceted, intertwining the ripe red fruit of Merlot with the herbaceous and smoky notes of Cabernet Franc, and the clear balsamic aromas of Colorino. On the palate, it offers a rich and persistent sip, supported by elegant tannins and a solid flavour profile that evolves through flavours of plum, cherry, dark chocolate and sweet spices, especially after a one-hour decanting.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Tenuta di Poggio Casciano, in the heart of the Tuscan landscape. Ruffino has selected this area for its unique microclimate and highly distinctive soils. The vines grow between 290 and 450 metres above sea level on soils rich in clay and limestone, with a small fraction of silt. This geology ensures optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in a blend that enhances the international varieties and highlights the authentic connection with the land.
How it is produced
The process begins with fermentation and temperature-controlled maceration in steel, with punch-downs and délestage to manage the correct aromatic extraction. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation enriched by periodic bâtonnage. This is followed by a significant twenty-four month maturation in new French oak barrels, essential for defining the depth of flavour and integrating the tannins. The production cycle is completed with a final four-month rest to stabilise and perfect the overall balance of the sensory profile.
History and Curiosities
The story of Alauda began in the early 2000s, when Ruffino's agronomists identified a unique microclimate and soil at the Poggio Casciano Estate. Produced exclusively in exceptional vintages such as 2022, this prestigious organic Toscana IGT blends international grape varieties with the traditional Colorino to elegantly interpret the local terroir. Patient ageing in French barriques transforms each bottle into a true collector's rarity, celebrating the identity of the cru through a rich, structured sip with enveloping tannins.

The company produces and sells more than thirty million bottles across forty labels, most of which come from Tuscany’s historic denominations such as Chianti, Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, in addition to the production of Prosecco and Pinot Grigio in Veneto.
Ruffino grows grapes in over 600 hectares of vineyards across eight estates: six in Tuscany – Poggio Casciano, Montemasso, Santedame, Gretole, La Solatia and Greppone Mazzi – two in Veneto: Cà del Duca and La Duchessa.
Ruffino was established in Pontassieve in 1877, near Florence. The main headquarters is still located on the same premises, which have been extended, modernized and equipped with innovative technology over the years, without ever losing sight of the company’s history and attachment to the local area.
The value produced by the Ruffino Group in 2019 exceeded 130 million euro.
The export revenue is significant: Ruffino is distributed worldwide due to a structured and well-developed commercial network.
Since 2011, the company has been part of Constellation Brands, an American market leader in the beer, wine & spirits sector. Read more
