Description

What kind of wine it is

Rolly Gassmann Alsace Kappelweg de Rorschwihr Gewurztraminer is an aromatic still white wine that expresses the unique characteristics of Alsace. Made from Gewurztraminer grapes, it appears in the glass with a clear golden yellow colour. The nose reveals a complex bouquet, led by distinct exotic fruit aromas that blend with pronounced mineral and spicy notes. On the palate, it shows a full-bodied structure, offering an enveloping taste progression and a notably persistent finish.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in France, in the village of Rorschwihr, located in the northern part of the Haut-Rhin. Here, the Rolly Gassmann winery operates, managing vineyards spread between the communes of Rorschwihr and Bergheim. The heart of these vines' expressiveness lies in the geological composition of the soils: the alternation of clay, sand, limestone and granite provides varied nourishment to the plants, giving a strong and decisive character that supports the wine's aromatic complexity and establishes a clear connection to the territory.

How it is produced

The production focuses on enhancing the varietal aromatic profile, resulting in a structured and particularly long-lived wine. Its ability to evolve over time translates into an estimated ageing potential of up to ten years. To allow the bouquet to express itself optimally, it is recommended to decant for one hour before serving, ideally at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. The structural breadth of this wine pairs harmoniously with fish dishes, shellfish, poultry, mature cheeses and spicy dishes.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1611, the Rolly Gassmann winery cultivates fifty hectares in the heart of Alsace. The mosaic of soils composed of clay, sand, limestone and granite shapes the unmistakable character of the Kappelweg de Rorschwihr. This refined single-variety Gewurztraminer, certified Alsace AOC for the 2019 vintage, embodies the company's centuries-old dedication. The extraordinary complexity of this wine promises a longevity of up to ten years, ensuring a memorable evolution of flavour that acquires profound elegance over time.

Rolly Gassmann is based in the small village of Rorschwirhr, in the Northernmost part of the Upper Rhine Department in Alsace. The property consists of about 50 hectares of vineyards, divided between the municipalties of Rorschwirhr and Bergheim, allows for a unique variety of soils: clay, sand, limestone and granite alternate in this area, creating wines with a strong and decisive character.

The winery is now run by Marie-Thérèse, Louis and their son Pierre Gassmann. The production is about 300,000 bottles per year, only 20% of which are destined for export outside France.
