Description
What kind of wine it is
Rocca di Frassinello Maremma Toscana Rosso is a still wine of great elegance, an authentic expression of its native land. This blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot offers a deep aromatic profile, with notes of black cherry, plum and ripe red berries, enhanced by hints of balsamic, tobacco and sweet spices. On the palate, it is structured and harmonious, with lively freshness and soft, silky tannins that provide a pleasant roundness. The finish is long and persistent, with a delightful return of fruity and spicy notes.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in Gavorrano, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, on hills about ninety metres above sea level. The vineyards thrive on medium-textured soil rich in stones, whose stony component is essential for determining the quality and density of the tannic structure. The area's warm and dry climate, with average temperatures higher than other Tuscan districts, encourages full and early ripening of the grapes. These environmental conditions result in a wine glass capable of expressing a natural intensity of flavour, while maintaining impeccable balance.
How it is produced
The harvest is carried out by hand at the beginning of September. To enhance the identity of each variety, the grapes undergo separate vinification in stainless steel tanks, with temperature-controlled fermentation for about fifteen days, followed by malolactic fermentation. Ageing continues for twelve months in French oak barrels, with eighty percent new wood, and concludes with a final rest of eleven months. This careful process gives the wine a velvety texture, in which freshness and structure are perfectly integrated.
History and Curiosities
Born from the prestigious collaboration between Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite and Cantina Castellare, this Maremma Toscana DOC originates from a splendid winery designed by Renzo Piano. In 2021, a warm and dry climate ensured the perfect ripening of the grapes. Described as a true wine for great competition by Christian Le Sommer, who created it together with Alessandro Cellai, it harmoniously combines strength and elegance. Ageing in French oak barriques gives it a rare depth, revealing itself as rounded, structured, and with an exceptionally long finish.

Land, therefore, similar to Tuscany’s most famous wine regions, but with one important difference: an average temperature 4 to 5 and even 6 °C higher, with grapes therefore characterised by the ability to ripen even three to four weeks earlier..
This area, so incredibly well suited for cultivating grapes is part of the Gavorrano and Roccastrada municipalities. It is indeed here where the first – and so far only one of its kind – French-Italian joint venture project for the production of wine took shape.
The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), leading French wine brand in the world, aimed from the very beginning to bring together the experience of Castellare in the cultivation and vinification of Tuscany’s main vine variety, the famous Sangioveto, with Lafite’s long standing know-how of classical French vines like Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz. It took two years to bring together the five small farms that make up the 500 hectares of the Rocca di Frassinello, a continuing project which today already sees close to 90 hectares of planted vineyards. This already extremely ambitious venture has been further enriched by marking and pairing the birth of the Rocca di Frassinello winery with one of the most prestigious names in the world of design and architecture: that of Renzo Piano.
