Description

What kind of wine it is

Le Sughere di Frassinello is a still red wine that embodies the authentic soul of the Tuscan Maremma. This structured blend is created from the union of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, presenting in the glass with an intense ruby colour and bright violet highlights. On the nose, the aromatic bouquet reveals clear notes of cherry, blackberry and plum, enriched by a touch of sweet spices. On the palate, it stands out for its soft, rounded tannins, perfectly balanced with a pleasant freshness. The finish is persistent and enveloping, enhanced by balsamic nuances and hints of liquorice, making it ideal for pairing with red meats and game.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the vineyards of the Rocca di Frassinello estate, located in Gavorrano, in the heart of the Maremma, in an area of excellence between Bolgheri and Scansano. The vineyards stretch at an altitude of about ninety metres, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate that encourages a slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The soil is characterised by medium-textured earth and a rich presence of stones, elements that give the fruit extraordinary intensity. This unique combination of microclimate and geology defines a distinctive terroir, fundamental in shaping the character and harmony of this red wine.

How it is produced

The production process involves a staggered harvest: picking begins with the Merlot at the end of August and continues with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-September. Each variety is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks to enhance its varietal characteristics. After malolactic fermentation, which gives the wine its smoothness, it undergoes a period of maturation in barrels, half of which are new, for twelve months. The process concludes with a further rest in bottle for nine months, a crucial stage for harmonising the different components and giving the wine elegance and a long aromatic persistence.

History and Curiosities

Le Sughere di Frassinello is a refined Maremma Toscana DOC born from the collaboration between Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite and Castellare di Castellina. This project merges French winemaking excellence with Tuscan tradition. The second label of Rocca di Frassinello, it originates in Gavorrano on a 90-hectare estate with a winery designed by Renzo Piano. The excellent 2022 vintage received a score of 91/100 from James Suckling, a testament to its superior quality perfected by careful ageing in barriques.

The Rocca di Frassinello project was inspired by a very simple idea – or should we say a very simple need: to replicate the model of excellence set in motion by the Castellare di Castellina winery in a new region. We set our sights on the central Maremma area, between Bolgheri and Scansano, where a sort of geological foot can be found, with the same characteristics as the Chianti and Montalcino terrains (of which this foot is in fact a kind of extension towards the sea).

Land, therefore, similar to Tuscany’s most famous wine regions, but with one important difference: an average temperature 4 to 5 and even 6 °C higher, with grapes therefore characterised by the ability to ripen even three to four weeks earlier..

This area, so incredibly well suited for cultivating grapes is part of the Gavorrano and Roccastrada municipalities. It is indeed here where the first – and so far only one of its kind – French-Italian joint venture project for the production of wine took shape.

The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), leading French wine brand in the world, aimed from the very beginning to bring together the experience of Castellare in the cultivation and vinification of Tuscany’s main vine variety, the famous Sangioveto, with Lafite’s long standing know-how of classical French vines like Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz. It took two years to bring together the five small farms that make up the 500 hectares of the Rocca di Frassinello, a continuing project which today already sees close to 90 hectares of planted vineyards. This already extremely ambitious venture has been further enriched by marking and pairing the birth of the Rocca di Frassinello winery with one of the most prestigious names in the world of design and architecture: that of Renzo Piano.
