Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Pira by Roagna is a still red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes, a faithful and profound expression of Barolo. The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of blood orange, pomegranate, strawberry and raspberry, enriched by dog rose and violet. Hints of undergrowth and balsamic notes then emerge, with delicate touches of pink pepper, cardamom, ash and dark chocolate. On the palate, it reveals masterful freshness and pronounced savouriness, harmoniously balanced by a velvety tannic texture. The sip proceeds elegantly and in balance, finishing with a persistent finale that highlights the wine's structure.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the historic Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, protected by the Rocche and the surrounding woodland. The vines, which are over twenty-five years old, come from a massal selection carried out by recovering cuttings from the oldest plants in the plot. The agronomic management is based on strict respect for the soil, bringing the bunches to optimal physiological ripeness. Harvesting is carried out exclusively by manual picking in small crates, preceded by two careful selections to preserve the maximum integrity of the fruit before processing in the cellar.

How it is produced

The production method favours long timescales to enhance the qualities of the grape variety. Fermentation begins in wooden vats thanks to a pied de cuve made from indigenous yeasts. The must then undergoes a prolonged submerged cap maceration of around sixty to seventy days, an essential step for precise and delicate extraction of colour and tannins. Ageing continues for about five years in oak barrels and cement tanks, a technical choice that defines the final structure, ensuring measured evolution without ever overpowering the natural identity of the grape.

History and Curiosities

Barolo Pira by Roagna, an authentic expression of Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, is produced from vines over 25 years old originating from massal selection. This artisanal vinification enhances the terroir through the use of indigenous yeasts and a long submerged cap maceration lasting 60-70 days. Its exceptional complexity reaches its peak thanks to five years of ageing in neutral oak and cement, resulting in a wine of extraordinary savouriness, with a velvety tannic structure and a persistent, captivating finish.

The true heritage of the Roagna family vineyards are the old vines. Plants that are at least 50 years old, in some cases even up to 80 years old. Vines that continue to produce few grapes but of high quality. Care and attention is dedicated to this heritage in the various estate vineyards between the Barbaresco and Barolo areas, in order to obtain a final product of the highest level.

Wines that fully express terroir, in the true sense of the term, where the grape variety and its place claim recognisability and authenticity in the glass. This is the desire of Alfredo and Luca Roagna.
