Description
What kind of wine it is
Rainoldi Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva is a still red wine that expresses the character of the Valtellina Superiore region. Made from Nebbiolo grapes, it displays a bright ruby red colour. Its delicate and ethereal aroma offers hints of walnuts and spirit-soaked plums, leading to a harmonious, velvety and persistent palate. Its solid structure makes it suitable for long ageing, preserving the original characteristics of the grape variety without undergoing any filtration.
Where it comes from
This red originates from the renowned Sassella area, located between the municipalities of Castione Andevenno and Sondrio. The vineyards are situated on steep heroic viticulture terraces facing south, at altitudes between 290 and 630 metres. The vines sink their roots into soils rich in ferrous rock and minerals, giving the wine a balanced and intense character. This combination imparts a strong personality to the Nebbiolo, outlining a profile closely linked to the specific pedoclimatic conditions.
How it is produced
The Nebbiolo grapes are hand-harvested in October, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation with daily pump-overs. The wine matures for twenty-four months in oak barrels, gradually developing structure and elegance. It is then blended in steel tanks for two months. The process concludes with a careful final ageing in the dark in the cellar, maintaining a production process free from filtration to ensure full aromatic integrity.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1925, Casa Vinicola Rainoldi produces this exclusive Riserva only in the best vintages. The result of heroic viticulture carried out on steep, south-facing terraces, this Nebbiolo draws strength from the iron-rich soils of Sassella. After 24 months in oak without filtration, it releases an ethereal bouquet with elegant notes of walnuts and spirit-soaked plums. On the palate, this Valtellina Superiore DOCG reveals itself as harmonious and velvety, offering an exceptional persistence that makes it perfect for accompanying red meats and oily fish.
