Description
Wine type
Quintodecimo’s Irpinia Aglianico Terra d’Eclano is a still red wine that accurately interprets the character of the Aglianico grape variety. Vinified in steel and aged in oak barrels, an authentic expression of the Irpinia region, it displays a complex aromatic profile with notes of plum, forest fruits, violet, and dried rose petals, enriched by hints of liquorice, coffee, and spices. On the palate, it reveals an enveloping and soft structure, supported by fine, silky tannins leading to a long, spicy finish, marked by mineral and balsamic echoes. It pairs ideally with structured first courses, pork, and flavourful cheeses.
Origin
The grapes come from Mirabella Eclano, in the Avellino area, from vineyards situated at an altitude of between 420 and 460 metres above sea level. The vines take root in clay and tuff soils, essential for giving the fruit great intensity and freshness. Grown using the spurred cordon system, the plants enjoy a triple exposure (south-east, south-west, and north-west), which ensures balanced pedoclimatic conditions. Quintodecimo’s agricultural management focuses on low yields to enhance the grape variety’s identity and the local area’s characteristics.
How it is produced
The process begins at the end of October with manual harvesting, careful selection of the bunches, and destemming. Separate vinification by parcel respects the characteristics of each individual section of the vineyard, with fermentation and maceration in steel at a controlled temperature for a period of 21–30 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, starting an eighteen-month ageing period in barrels that consolidates the wine’s harmony. The various parcels are finally combined into the final blend, which rests for a further six months before being released for sale.
History and trivia
The result of Luigi Moio's vision, the Irpinia Aglianico Terra d’Eclano 2023 embodies the essence of five historic vineyards on the Quintodecimo estate. The vines, cultivated with low yields on clay and tuffaceous soils, benefit from a triple exposure. Enhancing the terroir of Mirabella Eclano, this red boasts exceptional longevity, capable of evolving beautifully for up to twenty-five years.
