Description
What kind of wine it is
Sito dell’Ulmo Merlot by Planeta is a still red wine that interprets the Sicilian terroir within Sicily. This Merlot displays a broad and dense structure, accompanied by polished tannins and a persistent, balsamic finish. The bouquet offers aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and candied violet, which blend with notes of mint, thyme, lavender, dark spices and mineral hints. A full and harmonious glass, with remarkable length on the palate, capable of evolving beautifully over time.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the single Ulmo vineyard, located on the shores of Lake Arancio between Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia. The vines, grown at around two hundred metres altitude, thrive on medium-textured soils that are slightly calcareous, rich in pebbles and organic matter. These Mediterranean conditions impart a distinctive savoury intensity to the wine, harmoniously balancing the fruity character, aromatic herbs and the natural expressive intensity of the grape.
How it is produced
Manual harvesting precedes destemming and crushing. Fermentation takes place with skin maceration for about two weeks. After malolactic fermentation in steel, the wine matures for fourteen months in Allier oak barrels, half of which are new. This process consolidates its structure and softens the tannins, resulting in a glass with a deep ruby colour and pronounced continuity on the palate, suitable for long ageing in the cellar.
