Description
What kind of wine it is
Planeta Maroccoli Syrah is a red wine that showcases the potential of the Syrah grape variety in Sicily. On the palate, it displays a remarkable balance between dense, silky tannins and refined freshness. Its intense ruby colour heralds a complex bouquet, characterised by notes of cocoa and black pepper, cherries in spirit, and liquorice. Its spicy texture pairs beautifully with braised red meats, mature cheeses, and dishes from oriental cuisine.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Maroccoli vineyard, located in Sambuca di Sicilia, in the renowned Menfi area. Thanks to an altitude reaching 400 metres, abundant sunlight, and a warm, dry climate, optimal ripening is ensured. The soils, rich in stones and limestone with clay components, give the wine a deep structure and a finish of great freshness. The vineyard rows are managed according to the principles of organic and sustainable viticulture.
How it is produced
After destemming and crushing, maceration on the skins lasts for 21 days in stainless steel tanks, allowing for precise extraction of colour and aromas. The subsequent malolactic fermentation, carried out in both steel and wood, stabilises and rounds out the flavour profile. The wine matures for about a year in French oak barrels from Allier, which define its elegant character. A final period of bottle ageing ensures the achievement of perfect harmony.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1985 on the hills of Menfi, the Planeta winery chose to enhance this noble grape variety in the heart of the sunniest and driest part of Sicily. From an organic vineyard located at 400 metres above sea level, characterised by calcareous soils rich in stones, the Maroccoli Syrah 2021 is born. Awarded prestigious accolades, including 94 points from Vinous, this majestic Menfi DOC matures in oak barriques, developing a full-bodied character and silky tannins. Its excellent ageing potential ensures a memorable tasting experience over time.
