Description
What kind of wine it is
Eruzione 1614 Riesling is an organic white wine produced by Planeta, a pure expression of Rhine Riesling that enhances the identity of the Sicilian lands. Visually, it displays a pale hue, enriched by delicate green highlights. The aromatic profile is lively and inviting, with notes of white apple, plum, lemon, and yellow flowers. On the palate, it is dry and vibrant, characterised by balanced acidity and a distinct mineral imprint. Its structure is enhanced by vinification in stainless steel and careful ageing on fine lees at every stage of production.
Where it comes from
The grapes ripen in the picturesque Sciaranuova vineyard, located in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the slopes of Mount Etna. In this setting of heroic viticulture, the vines grow at over eight hundred metres above sea level, benefiting from significant mountain temperature variations. The wine's name recalls the historic eruption that shaped the local landscape, stopping just short of these terraces. The soil, composed of coarse-textured black volcanic sands, is extraordinarily rich in minerals, an element that imparts a profound volcanic tension to the sip.
How it is produced
Vineyard management follows the principles of organic farming and the SOStain sustainability protocol, aimed at protecting the balance of the natural ecosystem. The bunches are hand-picked and immediately chilled to eight degrees to preserve their aromatic integrity. After manual selection, a gentle destemming and soft pressing are carried out. The must ferments in steel tanks at a controlled temperature, where the wine then rests on the lees until March. Periodic stirring during ageing enriches its texture, ensuring impeccable gustatory balance.
History and Curiosities
The name celebrates the legendary eruption of Etna in 1614, the longest ever recorded, which stopped right at the borders of the Sciaranuova vineyards. On these precious terraces at an altitude of 815 metres, the Planeta winery launched a pioneering project: the first Riesling on Etna and in all of Sicily. Born with the 2014 vintage and boasting ratings of up to 98 points, this wine tells the story of the land through its 4,500 vines, offering the glass an exclusive volcanic minerality born from the black lava sands.
