Description

What kind of wine it is

Chiara Boschis' Langhe Nebbiolo clearly reveals the nature of Nebbiolo. In the glass, it displays a ruby red hue tending towards garnet with violet reflections, accompanied by a fruity, sweet and distinctive bouquet. On the palate, the sip unfolds dry and velvety, supported by measured tannins and balanced by a pleasant acidity. This harmony, enhanced by an hour's decanting, makes it the ideal companion for cured meat platters, stuffed pasta and flavourful roast meats.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the heart of the Langhe, in Piedmont. The harvest takes place in a dedicated vineyard and along specific buffer zones, consisting of border rows adjacent to non-organic land belonging to other producers. This meticulous agricultural management protects the health of the vines and ensures the integrity of the bunches. The care taken in sourcing the raw material results in a pronounced territorial imprint, capable of faithfully reflecting the pedoclimatic characteristics of this wine-growing area.

How it is produced

Vinification focuses on a careful ageing process, which begins with a period of about fourteen months in second-use French oak barrels. The use of previously used containers guides the slow maturation without overpowering the varietal character, preserving its original qualities. This is followed by a minimum of two months' rest in the bottle, necessary to complete the harmonisation of flavours. This sequence of precise timings defines a structured, velvety and undoubtedly refined profile.

History and Curiosities

The 2023 vintage of Langhe Nebbiolo by Pira E. & Figli - Chiara Boschis offers an elegant introduction to Piedmont's most prestigious grape variety. Presented in the traditional dark glass Albeisa bottle, this fine DOC red matures for 14 months in French oak barriques. The label, adorned with a classic crest in gold, red and blue, fully reflects the wine's nobility and the unmistakable style of the winery. On the palate, it is dry and harmonious, with well-balanced tannins that skilfully blend aesthetics, history and passion.

The Pira were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in the parish registers since the 17th century, who also became winemakers between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old production school, created his wines by assembling the grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He claimed that, just as cows must graze in the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for the wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop here: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker to to carry out the crushing on foot and the production without the support of any technical means.

Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira family by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her full-time passion for wine and her world, becoming one of the first women to produce Barolo at the end of the 1980s.

Taking care of this "little big house" has brought a breath of fresh air to the cellar and in the style of production. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined by her brother Giorgio, who shares with her a great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also thanks to his thirty years of experience.

The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic farming, for which the company is certified by the 2014 harvest. The production is very limited (about 40,000 bottles per year), coming from grapes produced directly.

Characterised by a dry and velvety taste, this Nebbiolo pairs beautifully with more intense flavours. It elegantly accompanies cured meat platters and stuffed pasta dishes, where its well-balanced acidity and tannins harmonise every bite. It is also sublime for enhancing succulent roast meats. It is recommended to decant it for an hour.
