Description

What kind of wine it is

Pira Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova is an organic red wine that expresses the essence of the Nebbiolo grape variety, here present in the Michet and Lampia sub-varieties. To the eye, it displays an intense garnet colour, which anticipates a deep bouquet characterised by notes of dried leaves, violet and liquorice. On the palate, it reveals a savoury and harmonious flavour profile, supported by an austere structure and chiselled tannins that ensure a persistent finish. This full-bodied structure pairs magnificently with braised meats and mature cheeses, boasting an excellent capacity for ageing.

Where it comes from

This wine is born in the heart of Barolo, preserving the memory of an ancient vineyard now integrated into the Terlo geographical mention. In full respect of the Piedmontese territory, Chiara Boschis creates a blend of grapes from selected plots located in Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba and Monforte d’Alba. The vines sink their roots into calcareous-clay marl and silty soils, enriched with veins of Miocene-origin sand. This geological complexity gives the glass a distinct mineral character, consolidating its structural freshness.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with a floating cap fermentation carried out in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Frequent pumping over and punching down allow for optimal extraction of phenolic components. Maturation lasts for about two years and involves the combined use of large casks and French oak barriques, a technical choice aimed at gradually integrating the tannins. The production cycle concludes with a period of bottle ageing, an essential step to stabilise the aromatic profile and ensure maximum harmony on the palate.

History and Curiosities

The Barolo Via Nuova 2021 preserves the memory of an ancient vineyard now vanished, today included in the Terlo subzone. Produced by Chiara Boschis to honour the historic practice of blending, this wine combines Nebbiolo grapes from prestigious Piedmontese vineyards. This organic red wine offers a deep aromatic profile, enriched with hints of violet, dried leaves and liquorice. On the palate, it is savoury, harmonious and full-bodied, supported by elegant chiselled tannins that ensure a persistent finish, ideal for accompanying rich braised dishes.

The Pira were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in the parish registers since the 17th century, who also became winemakers between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old production school, created his wines by assembling the grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He claimed that, just as cows must graze in the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for the wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop here: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker to to carry out the crushing on foot and the production without the support of any technical means.

Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira family by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her full-time passion for wine and her world, becoming one of the first women to produce Barolo at the end of the 1980s.

Taking care of this "little big house" has brought a breath of fresh air to the cellar and in the style of production. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined by her brother Giorgio, who shares with her a great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also thanks to his thirty years of experience.

The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic farming, for which the company is certified by the 2014 harvest. The production is very limited (about 40,000 bottles per year), coming from grapes produced directly.
