Description
What kind of wine it is
The Barolo Mosconi is an organic red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes, specifically the Michet and Lampia varieties. It stands out for its intense garnet red colour and a deep bouquet, where hints of rosewater and peony intertwine with notes of wild berries, tobacco, and delicate spices. On the palate, its majestic structure supports a full and enveloping sip, characterised by lively yet velvety tannins. This complex texture and long finish pair perfectly with red meat dishes, game, braised meats, and mature cheeses, preferably after decanting.
Where it comes from
This Barolo originates from the oldest vineyard of the Chiara Boschis winery, located in Monforte d’Alba at around four hundred metres above sea level. The vines sink their roots into ancient Helvetian soils, composed of alternating grey calcareous-clay marls and siliceous sandstones. In some areas of the vineyard, the presence of calcium carbonate and iron gives the soil pinkish hues. This specific geological composition is fundamental in giving the wine solidity and exceptional ageing potential.
How it is produced
Alcoholic fermentation takes place with the cap emerged in temperature-controlled steel tanks. During this phase, frequent pumping over and punching down allow for optimal extraction of colour and structure. The wine then matures for at least two years in lightly toasted French oak barrels. This careful passage in wood refines its aromatic complexity and softens the tannins before a final rest in the bottle for about a year, resulting in a harmonious, dry, and persistent sip.
History and Curiosities
The superb Barolo Mosconi 2021 by Chiara Boschis comes to life from the oldest vineyard of the estate in Monforte d’Alba, whose roots delve into prized calcareous-clay marls. The structure of this exceptional organic DOCG red wine matures through a skilful ageing process of two years in French oak barrels and a further year in the bottle. Housed in the traditional Albeisa bottle and celebrated with 98 points by James Suckling, this wine faithfully expresses the soul of Piedmont, offering a full and persistent sip of absolute and majestic elegance.

Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old production school, created his wines by assembling the grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He claimed that, just as cows must graze in the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for the wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop here: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker to to carry out the crushing on foot and the production without the support of any technical means.
Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira family by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her full-time passion for wine and her world, becoming one of the first women to produce Barolo at the end of the 1980s.
Taking care of this "little big house" has brought a breath of fresh air to the cellar and in the style of production. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined by her brother Giorgio, who shares with her a great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also thanks to his thirty years of experience.
The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic farming, for which the company is certified by the 2014 harvest. The production is very limited (about 40,000 bottles per year), coming from grapes produced directly. Read more
