Description
What kind of wine it is
Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino is a refined organic white wine from Veneto. Made from a meticulous blend of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes, it stands out for its straw yellow colour with bright gold-green highlights. Its aromatic profile is fresh and elegant, revealing floral notes of elderflower and fruity hints of limoncella apple and pear, enriched by subtle touches of hazelnut. On the palate, the sip is harmonious and balanced, characterised by an intense mineral savouriness that leads to a persistent and satisfying finish.
Where it comes from
This Soave Classico originates from the historic hilly area, from west-facing vineyards situated between two hundred and three hundred metres above sea level. The vines, trained using the Pergola Veronese system, grow on volcanic soil rich in basalt, clay and tuff, which imparts a distinctive mineral signature to the wine. The name Calvarino evokes the steep nature of the slopes and the dedication required for manual work among the rows, a commitment that translates into an authentic territorial identity.
How it is produced
The manual harvest takes place at different times to respect the ripening periods of the grapes: Trebbiano di Soave in mid-September and Garganega in October. In the winery, destemming and gentle pressing precede fermentation in glass-lined cement tanks. The blend matures for a year on its lees in these containers, gaining depth without losing freshness, before completing its journey with a necessary period of rest. It pairs perfectly with lean fish, savoury vegetable tarts and the traditional asparagus risotto.
History and Curiosities
The Calvarino vineyard represents the historical soul of the Pieropan family. Its name, meaning “little calvary”, evokes the steep slopes and the arduous cultivation of an exceptional volcanic soil rich in basalt and oceanic tuff. From this ancient plot comes an organic Soave Classico DOC which, since its first vintage in 1971, has embodied the winemaking excellence of the region. Here, the Garganega and Trebbiano grapes draw a profound minerality, offering the taster an authentic and refined expression, with vibrant freshness.

Leonildo's idea was simple but at the same time revolutionary: to enhance the individual vineyards and give the wines an identity based on the relationship between variety, soil, climate and human work. The strong link with the territory leads Leonildo to make important choices also for the agronomic management of the vineyard, eliminating chemical weeding in 2002 and starting to convert all production to organic in 2008. In 2008, with other friends, he founded ''FIVI'', the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers.
The Valpolicella adventure arrives in the early 2000s, with the acquisition of the Monte Garzon Vineyard and Villa Cipolla in Tregnago, recently renovated and used as a Wine RelaiIs. In a few years Leonildo became the best interpreter of Soave and a point of reference for the national and international markets.
The fourth generation, represented by his sons Andrea and Dario both graduates in agriculture and enology, after the painful loss of their father in 2018, continue the family tradition in the vineyards near Soave with the same love and passion of their forefathers. Read more
