Description

What kind of wine it is

Terasmino by Orto di Venezia is a still white wine from the island of Sant’Erasmo. The blend combines Malvasia Istriana and Trebbiano grapes, offering a pure profile with excellent tension. On the nose, aromas are influenced by sea breezes and mountain winds, leading to a sip with a distinctly mineral character. This savoury quality pairs perfectly with shellfish, asparagus, and vegetarian dishes, enhancing traditional Venetian recipes. It is a wine with excellent ageing potential, capable of evolving for around ten years.

Where it comes from

This white wine originates in Veneto, in an area defined by a pronounced maritime climate where the lagoon environment meets the sea. The soils are maintained through successive cover crops, using barley, radish, oats, and Chinese root to preserve natural fertility. The uniqueness of the area lies in an ancient drainage system that channels rainwater into the ditches between the rows, then releases it into the Venetian lagoon at low tide through historic hydraulic sluices.

How it is produced

Local viticulture promotes biodiversity by reviving traditional farming methods. The vines are grown as ungrafted vines to protect the authenticity of the area’s pre-phylloxera varieties. The vineyard is established using the hard-on-hard method with direct seeding, excluding ploughing, herbicides, and synthetic fertilisers. The skilful management of rainwater utilises the ancient drainage system, helping to concentrate the flavours and ensuring a deeply saline and territorial taste expression.

History and Curiosities

The white wine Orto di Venezia Terasmino originates from the island of Sant’Erasmo, reviving the ancient winemaking tradition of the Venetian lagoon. Through ingenious ancestral drainage with hydraulic sluices, the water flows away following the rhythm of the tides, fully respecting local biodiversity. The project makes use of ungrafted vines cultivated without ploughing, capable of offering an authentic pre-phylloxera profile. This rigorous ecological approach enhances a unique territory, celebrating an island agricultural vocation rooted since the eighteenth century.

From this winery
  • Oenologist: Lydia e Claude Bourguignon.
Michel Thoulouze and his family decided to relaunch wine production on the island using the traditional methods of the local farmers and the expertise of Lydia and Claude Bourguignon (Doctors of the Earth) and Alain Graillot whose Crozes Ermitage wines have a worldwide reputation. The resulting wine, ORTO, has all the character of this special island and it is the only wine cultivated within the territorial boundaries of Venice.
The ancestral drainage system on the island has been renovated. Rainwater collects in canals that cross the vineyard and the water is evacuated by opening sluice gates at low tide. Before planting the first vines, the ground was prepared only with plants (barley, radish).
the vines were planted by direct seeding without any ploughing following the principles of Claude Bourguignon and of course, never any weedkiller. An assembly of antique Italian grape varieties with a dominance of the Istrien Malvoisie in order to revive the flavour of wines in the past, before the philoxera epidemic, the vines were not grafted onto roots imported from America but planted directly. This is one of the reasons for ORTO's exceptional quality.
