Description
What kind of wine it is
Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet is a dry white wine that purely expresses the elegance of Chardonnay. With a bright lemon-yellow colour, it reveals a clear aromatic profile with notes of citrus, apple, white peach and delicate floral nuances. On the palate, it boasts a medium body, lively acidity and a pronounced minerality that define its vibrant and refreshing character. The sip finishes with a persistent finish, enriched by toasted nuances and a subtle touch of vanilla. It pairs excellently with grilled veal, white fish and goat's cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Burgundy, in the renowned Côte de Beaune, within the prestigious area of Puligny-Montrachet. The vineyards stretch at the foot of the hill between Meursault and Chassagne, on clay-limestone soils rich in stones that impart the typical saline tension. The village is located close to the water table: the presence of water underground has historically prevented the construction of underground cellars. From these highly suitable lands, Olivier Leflaive carefully selects the grapes to create a balanced blend capable of reflecting the essence of the terroir.
How it is produced
Care begins in the vineyard with a rigorous manual harvest. Once in the winery, the bunches are gently pressed using a pneumatic press to extract only the finest must. Ageing lasts for seventeen months, taking place in both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, some of which are new. This technical approach allows the delicate toasted notes to be integrated without overpowering the fruit, preserving an energetic drinkability and ensuring the wine's great longevity.
History and Curiosities
The name Puligny-Montrachet comes from “Pul”, meaning marsh: the presence of small pockets of water beneath the village makes it impossible to build underground cellars. On these precious clay-limestone soils, the historic Leflaive family selects the finest Chardonnay grapes. The 2022 vintage produced perfectly ripened bunches. Aged in oak barrels, this wine releases a pronounced minerality and notes of white peach, offering the palate lively freshness and long persistence.

Just after the First World War, Olivier’s grandfather, Joseph Leflaive was faced with the failure of his steel factory in Saint-Etienne.
His investments in Burgundy were all he had left and he decided to enlarge his wine estate. It became a family-run operation covering some 35 hectares. His son, Joseph Régis, was in insurance and along with his brother Vincent, decided to take over the reins in 1953.
The estate soon began producing top-flight wines, mainly due to the arrival of air conditioning in Puligny in the 1970s. This was a major step for winemakers in this village which sits two meters above the water table and as such, had no underground cellars. Read more
