Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Rocche di Castiglione by Oddero is a red wine from Piedmont with controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, featuring a ruby red colour with elegant garnet highlights. It is made from Nebbiolo grapes and aged in oak barrels. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet with balsamic and liquorice notes, hints of chocolate and touches of small red fruits. On the palate, it expresses a full structure, supported by a savoury and mineral vein and well-balanced acidity. The sweet and enveloping tannins make the sip elegant, finishing with a persistent and spicy aftertaste, ideal paired with braised red meats, game, and mature cheeses with intense flavours.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the prestigious Rocche di Castiglione cru, located in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Langhe. The old vines, over sixty years old, grow on a steep and rugged slope surrounded by woods, at an altitude of about two hundred and fifty metres with optimal south-east exposure. The sedimentary soil is poor and shallow, characterised by exposed bedrock. This poor substrate causes the plants to experience summer water stress, which naturally limits yields, allowing the aromas to concentrate in the bunches and giving the wine the typical tension of the area.
How it is produced
The process begins with a rigorous manual harvest and a double selection of the bunches. After destemming and crushing, the must ferments at a controlled temperature with careful maceration on the skins. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, an essential phase for balancing the sensory profile. Maturation involves a long ageing in oak barrels for thirty months, which helps to smooth the tannic texture and enhance aromatic complexity. The process concludes with twelve months of bottle ageing, ensuring the wine achieves full and harmonious expressive stability.
History and Curiosities
The prestige of the historic Oddero winery is fully expressed in this exclusive Barolo, born from 65-year-old vines in the renowned Rocche di Castiglione Falletto cru. Situated at 250 metres above sea level on poor soils with exposed rock, the pure Nebbiolo grapes are expertly harvested amidst the October mists. This limited and distinguished edition, enhanced by 94 points from Vinous, bears witness to a noble winemaking tradition documented since 1878, offering a structured, elegant experience deeply connected to the excellence of the Langhe region.

The history of today’s winery is inextricably tied to that of Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926 and grandson of the first Giacomo in the family (whom he was named after). Under Giacomo’s guidance, Poderi e Cantine Oddero took on its current productive configuration, extending vineyard property, increasing bottle production, and upholding a high quality that today is recognized worldwide.
The legacy of Giacomo Oddero is carried on today by his daughter Mariacristina, who entered the family business near the end of the 1990s, and grandchildren Isabella and Pietro, who represent the seventh generation of a family with over a century and a half of vinicultural tradition behind them.
