Description

What kind of wine it is

Etna Bianco by Murgo is a still white wine from Sicily with a controlled designation of origin, created from a skilful blend of Carricante and Catarratto. To the eye, it displays an elegant straw yellow colour, enhanced by subtle greenish highlights. The aromatic profile offers a refined bouquet, characterised by notes of broom, chamomile, and fresh hints of apple and citrus. On the palate, it is lively and dynamic, with a pronounced saline character that faithfully reflects its volcanic roots; vinified and matured in steel and barrels, it stands out for its harmonious balance and a clean, mineral finish.

Where it comes from

The area of origin extends along the slopes of Etna, in the territory of Santa Venerina, Sicily. The estate's vineyards are situated at around five hundred metres above sea level on sandy volcanic soils, key elements in imparting the wine's typical savouriness. The local climate is marked by a significant temperature range, an essential factor in preserving the aromatic freshness of the grapes. Murgo, a winery linked to the Scammacca family, produces a sincere territorial expression, capable of conveying the uniqueness of the Etna terroir.

How it is produced

After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo destemming and a cold maceration for about fifteen hours. Once the gentle pressing and static decantation are completed, fermentation at a controlled temperature takes place partly in steel tanks and partly in barrels. The maturation process continues with ageing in steel and lightly toasted barrels for a period ranging from six to ten months. A final rest of a few months in the bottle allows the wine to achieve maximum gustatory harmony before being enjoyed.

History and Curiosities

Produced in the historic lands of the San Michele Estate, linked to the Scammacca family since 1860, Murgo Etna Bianco is born from the skilful blend of Carricante and Catarratto grapes. The unique microclimate and fertile soils give the wine unmistakable mineral sensations and great aromatic complexity. Since its first vintage in 2010, this label has embodied respectful viticulture, an authentic and vibrant expression of the volcanic terroir.

The Murgo cellars were founded in 1860 when Senator Luigi Gravina gave the Scammacca family about 30 hectares of vineyard on Etna where, today, the San Michele estate stands.

Currently the vineyards have an extension of 60 hectares, distributed in the three different estates of San Michele (CT), Gelso Bianco (CT) and La Francescana (RM) and are mostly dedicated to the production of VSQ, Etna Doc and IGT wines. From some grape varieties of French origin, we also get interesting creative wines. The total production of our cellar amounts to 350,000 bottles.

Another 60 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of olive and citrus trees, from which we obtain our Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Murgo jams and other local quality products.
