Description

What kind of wine it is

Montalbera La Tradizione Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato is a Piedmontese wine that represents the pure expression of the Ruchè grape variety. It displays a ruby red colour with violet highlights and an intense aromatic bouquet reminiscent of rose petals and violets, with a pleasant evolution towards spices. On the palate, it is warm and full-bodied, harmonised by a delicate tannic texture, hints of plum and peppery notes. This persistent sip pairs perfectly with mushroom risottos or flavourful roast and grilled meats.

Where it comes from

The wine originates from the Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato area, a small hilly region in Piedmont. The Montalbera winery manages the vineyards following organic and sustainable farming practices. The vines, trained low Guyot, sink their roots into clay and limestone soils, benefiting from varied exposures that favour optimal ripening of the grapes. These pedoclimatic conditions ensure grapes of excellent quality, transferring the authentic structure and clear imprint of the Asti area into the glass.

How it is produced

The winery follows a traditional red vinification, with maceration on the skins for over ten days to extract colour and substance. Ageing continues in stainless steel tanks to preserve the varietal purity of Ruchè, completed by a period of rest in the bottle. Careful one-hour decanting maximises its expressiveness, enhancing a sip of remarkable longevity, capable of developing fascinating complexity and new nuances over the years.

History and Curiosities

Founded in the 20th century, the Montalbera winery celebrates the ancient and mysterious Piedmontese grape variety from which this fascinating organic wine is born. The origins of Ruchè are shrouded in legends of medieval monks, possible roots in Upper Savoy, and its connection to the typical “roche” of Asti. Today, this native variety thrives in the clay-limestone soils of Castagnole Monferrato. Awarded the prestigious DOCG designation, this red wine encapsulates a centuries-old tradition, combining the region’s deep historical heritage with truly sustainable viticulture.

The Montalbera Winery was founded at the beginning of the 20th century in an area located in the townships of Grana, Castagnole Monferrato, and Montemagno.

In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.

A unique aspect that has always distinguished Montalbera in the Piedmontese winemaking landscape is that the winery sits astride two of the region’s most important winemaking zones: the Monferrato and the Langhe.
