Description
What kind of wine it is
Montalbera Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato Laccento is an alluring red wine from Piedmont, made from Ruchè grapes. In the glass, it displays a ruby red colour with violet hues in its youth, tending towards garnet as it matures. The aromatic profile is intense, characterised by elegant notes of rose petals, violet and small wild berries. On the palate, it is warm, harmonious and exceptionally silky, supported by a velvety tannic structure. Served between 14 and 16 °C, it pairs perfectly with game, cured meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato area, in the heart of Piedmont. The Montalbera vineyards benefit from full southern exposure, situated on the sunniest hill in the area at around 280 metres above sea level. The soils, characterised by a clay and limestone matrix, give the wine a balanced structure and its typical aromatic profile. The unique hilly microclimate between the Langhe and Monferrato provides an ideal environment for grape ripening, enhancing the characteristics of the variety.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place between September and October, with careful selection of overripe bunches combined with a blend of grapes dried on the vine. The training system used is low Guyot. In the winery, vinification involves a cold pre-maceration, followed by a brief hot post-maceration. The must remains in contact with the skins for about two weeks, encouraging the extraction of body and aromas. The wine matures in stainless steel tanks and completes its process with bottle ageing of at least six months, kept horizontally at a controlled temperature.
History and Curiosities
The Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG Laccento by Montalbera, a winery founded in 2002, is a Piedmontese masterpiece. The elegance of this grape variety is enhanced by combining overripe grapes with bunches left to wither directly in the vineyard. Thanks to skilful cold maceration and subsequent contact with the skins, the wine develops a rare silkiness on the palate, releasing intense aromas of rose petals. The slow ageing in the bottle for at least six months consolidates its structure, warm and harmonious, ensuring remarkable longevity.

In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.
A unique aspect that has always distinguished Montalbera in the Piedmontese winemaking landscape is that the winery sits astride two of the region’s most important winemaking zones: the Monferrato and the Langhe. Read more
