Description

What kind of wine it is

Michele Satta Syrah expresses the intense aromatic complexity of the Syrah grape. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour, revealing an aromatic profile where hints of lavender, violets and wild berries intertwine with notes of tobacco, liquorice, pepper and cinchona. The palate is enveloping and harmonious, supported by velvety tannins that perfectly balance the structure. The tasting offers a long persistence and finishes with a savoury and mineral finish, revealing a wine with remarkable ageing potential.

Where it comes from

This wine is born in the heart of Bolgheri, in Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany. The proximity to the sea and the Mediterranean climate favour optimal ripening of the grapes, preserving their aromatic integrity. The project interprets the local terroir, inspired by the finesse of the great wines of the Rhône. To best enhance this variety, they waited until the estate vineyards were over fifteen years old, in order to obtain grapes capable of expressing an authentic territorial identity.

How it is produced

The harvest selects grapes at perfect ripeness, vinified including a portion of whole bunches. The spontaneous fermentation takes place in oak vats thanks to indigenous yeasts, with the help of manual punch-downs to ensure balanced extraction. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine matures for eighteen months in barrels, completing its journey with bottle ageing. Ideal paired with game, lamb and mature cheeses, it benefits from prior decanting to fully express its character.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1991 from the intuition of Michele Satta to enhance the exceptional Tuscan Mediterranean terroir, this vibrant red pays homage to the renowned wines of the Rhône. After more than fifteen years of patient vineyard care, the winery is able to fully express the character of these demanding grapes through a rigorous organic and sustainable philosophy. The extraordinary 2023 vintage, awarded 95 points by James Suckling, is carefully matured in used barriques and then in bottle, offering connoisseurs a captivating tasting experience with a profound sense of place.

My arrival in Castagneto Carducci is "coincidental." I came from Varese, and I was on vacation with my dad, an engineer, Sardinian surname and chromosomes, and my mother, a teacher, when I received a job offer from the owner of a local farm. I had just enrolled at the University of Agriculture of Milan (I graduated four years later in Pisa) and immediately with my first internship in October 74, I started with the harvest! My job was cleaning, serving the most humble tasks, watching and more watching, studying and working.

I learned many aspects of agriculture, I learned that the land becomes hard when the wind blows; that there will be bad weather when the swallows fly low. I learned the cycle of the plant and why in certain areas of the field, plants struggle and in others, they do not. I learned that the peasant culture is an immense patrimony of unity with nature and patient respect of reality.

I decided to ride the wave of a boundless passion to start my own business and I took some old vines and their old cellar for rent. In the '83 the first harvest, and from that day on, a story that has grown step-by-step with the history of Bolgheri (1984 is the year of foundation of the Bolgheri DOC). I planted my first vineyard in ‘91 and then purchased the land that I could and I felt right to be able to make wine, from the grapes I had planted and produce my own bottles. In those years my experience grew not only of the land but also of the international wine culture, and I began travelling abroad. This widened knowledge and comparisons.

My wife Lucia joined me in this adventure and, along with the company's history, shared with me the growth of a beautiful and large family: infact six children were born, five daughters and one son.

Now two of them, Giacomo and Benedetta, curious and passionat, are personally part of this company: on the path of tradition while looking at the new, the journey of the second generation begins!

Wine making The harvested and selected grapes ferment in 30 hl oak barrels with exclusively indigenous yeasts. Great attention is paid to the harvest time and the duration of maceration to extract soft tannins and enhance the aromatic richness.
